Wow, that's a lot of miles for a magazine!

You could not have picked a better windblocker. I don't think a 4x8 sheet of plywood would even block as much!

I wonder what higher-end sports cars like the 996 Turbo average/year?

Obviously will be variable, but probably very few older sporty cars like a 996 TT get very many miles put on them each year. It obviously depends on how many cars an individual owns, but at this stage in the life cycle of the 996 TT, 3000 miles a year might even be a high average.

I've averaged just over 2900 miles/year on my 996 Turbo since new.

I've only had mine since last May, and put a bit over 2K miles on it last year. Have no idea what I'll put on it this year, but about 20 so far :-)

It was up on a lift in my garage from early Dec. until just recently, when I took it out on its inaugural jaunt. I'm shortly going on a long trip, so probably won't drive it again until mid May, but then until Dec., I expect.

I bought the car over the phone. no ppi. I have been hunting long enough to know that if i didn't pull the trigger someone else would have. A gamble I can take. and , we really have no choice in this market.

do you know the owner of the car for the last 162000 miles?

I dont.

Just want to make sure the known issues were disclosed to you. I've had it on a lift and pointed out a few things to the dealer.

I mentioned to the dealer owner that there was a fluid leak, which was tentatively diagnosed as a trans fluid leak (possibly rear main seal that collected other grime, but looked like trans fluid).. didnt notice a coolant leak, but might want to make sure that isn't one of the fittings that need to be pinned/welded. the rear tires are the incorrect size, they are still within spec for the AWD, but they are too narrow. the car had a damaged front lip- i actually sold a spare lip I had to the dealer, but as of yesterday they hadnt picked it up from the place where I left it. My friend had an issue getting the alignment 100% dialed in.

it's a good car, rough around the edges. interior is in decent shape. the previous owner definitely didn't treat like it was anything special from what i could tell, but it also wasn't horrid.

Thank you so much for the info. I have tried to get info on it but theres not much out there. I will take it to the dealer for the proper alignment and will also correct the tires. I will also hey a thorough ppi and look at that oil leak. I have money i can put into it if need be. Im just glad i got the color and trans tjat i wanted. Anything else you can think of let me know!

also, i might need that (oem?) lip if you can get it?

You can get an replacement front lip from several aftermarket vendors for about $75. Install it yourself on a hot day (makes it easier) in about 20 minutes (or less).

Any type of vehicle with 100k miles or more is gonna leak something. Or multiple somethings. Nature of the beast. Drip pans are cheap.

How narrow is "too narrow"? I have 295/30-18 on 10" wide on mine, but I think most have wider.

Alignment would be the bigger issue for me.

All things considered, doesn't sound too bad as it's not a "Prestige Thread" kind of car. I've seen salvage title 996TTs with undiagnosed engine or tranny issues on the Copart insurance auction bring the kind of money that nelsontod paid for this car. Before I knew it was sold, I posted it over on 996outpost.com in the main thread in case one of those guys was interested in getting into an inexpensive 996TT as it seemed like a really good deal. I was not surprised that it sold so quickly. I think the Metropol blue interior makes it kind of cool.
