I have a 2002 996 tt with around 8000 miles and not all the time, but very occassionally, there is a very LOUD whistling noise seemingly coming from the rear-lateral area of the car at around 2500 to 3000 RPM. I hear the sound for only a few seconds and then it is gone and it is hard to reproduce. Any idea what this might indicate?

Most likely a hose leak. Fairly common and often tricky to find. Usually if it is the diverter valves, you will hear honking. You might consider replacing the valves and checking the hoses at the same time.

Jlee and Doug H - can you be more specific about when it happens (while in decel or coast or accel) - what gear - and more specifically the sound - I have an annoying sound in the rear of my car - same sound from my previous 996 TT and have not been successful in eliminating it. I'm curious if it is the same gremlin I have - any additional info is appreciated. TIA. T2

Hard to explain. Thought maybe it was a vacum leak, but sounded a bit like a belt slip or sqeak. Hard accelleration between maybe 2,500 and 4k it is noticeable. The engine noise may drown it out from that point. My just started doing it recently and was not there when I bought it. I will let you guys know what faulkt codes if any show up and what the diagnosis is.

It happens so infrequently it is hard to be detailed. But when it happens the sound is very LOUD and it is similar to a train whistle. It does not sound mechanical, but more like a sound coming from a wind instrument.
The two times that it happened(during around 2000 miles), I think I was at a partial throttle, and on different gears each time. I have a tiptronic and the first time was on the freeway going uphill at around 70 MPH and second time was on a local street around 40 MPH, but both times during moderate acceleration, at around 2500 RPM.

This sounds like the same issue I have - mine sounds like a bearing is binding and it's a high pitched squeal - usually on deceleration or part throttle - mine seems to start at about 2500 - 2200 RPM and is most prominent at 2000-1500 rpm - ie that's when I hear it the worst. On my 02 we had replaced the power steering hoses thinking it was a check valve sticking and finally replaced the pump but nothing seemed to remedy the problem - I have gotten my car to make the noise while sitting and revving it and a few times can make it so the noise is audible at idle - it seems to resonate through the power steering pump - however I beleive it may be one of the components like the alternator that is upstream of the ps pump in the belt train - I wonder if the bearing in the alternator is binding slightly or maybe it's a bearing for one of the other pulleys??? BTW - my 02 is a non X50 and my 03 is an X50. Let's keep in touch as things progress!!! Thanks for the feedback. Happy Holidays!!! T2

Interesting. I had this high pitched squeal in my 03 996TT, sporatically, after 5000 miles. The noise was only at idle and would disappear when I reved the engine. I thought it was a bearing or a loose belt. When I tracked the car, the whine was so bad someone came over to ask what my problem was. Since the track event, the noise disappeared. I now have 8000 miles on the car. I never found the cause.

The Whistling noise that I described at the start of this thread is most likely caused by damaged diverter valves. I found numerous threads on this topic on earlier posts. I will take the car in to the dealer after the Holidays.

I have the same sound on deceleration around 2000rpm. I even had a tech riding with me when I duplicated the problem. He didn't know what it was. They checked car later but were not able to duplicate it. They did not find anything wrong with car. It has not gotten worse but once you hear it you always can picked up and its real annoying. Even with a loud exhaust I can hear it.

I get the noise on partial throttle acceleration around 2500 RPM's very infrequently. I too believe the diverter valves are a likely suspect. Time to upgrade I guess.

They thought that the dv was the problem. They were noisy but it did not solve the problem after the replaced them. I would definitely replace the dv with aftermarket ones.
