If you are spraying clear over a freshly sanded headlight that was only finished to 1,500 as typical, I think there would be tons of tooth in the headlights and adhesion wouldn't be an issue at all. If you are spraying clear over headlights that have been sanded and buffed to perfection before spraying the clearcoat, then adhesion might be more of an issue.

Sanding at P400, then P800, then P1500, then spraying with clear coat without adhesion promoter works great.

I spray this right over 800. Covers great.

Exactly. And surely you don't have adhesion problems painting on a lens keyed with 800 grit.

Well, I finally got a 70 degree day so I shot the SprayMax clear in my garage. Here's a few pics after 4 coats. Might need to cut and buff the orange peel.

That's a good feeling, seeing that nice clear look, no yellow. I did this and indeed I had to sand & polish the clear coat to get it smooth.

Can you share your technique? I was thinking 1000, 1500, 2000, and cream polish. Sound right?

First 2000, then, in sequence, Machine Polish #2, #3, #4, then marine cleaner/wax. The Machine Polish was old stuff I had from Griot's Garage, not sure they sell it anymore. All done by hand, no tools. My orange peel was minimal, luck - not skill.

Ok, waited a week to cure. Cut from 1500 grit through 5000 grit. Used a DA with Griots Machine 3. Good enough for me.

I just went back and looked at your first post. From where those lens were to now is amazing. Very nice job. No wonder these cars last 50 years; owner's that care.

Those are SpeedTech. I got them when they first came out at the introductory price. Took me a year to finally fir them. Next time the bumper is off i'm going to black-out a few silver bits.
