definitely excited to see the GT2 smash the record, hell of a car. and to echo the sentiment of others above, heck of a driver too! who else watched the video in its entirety when they logged into rennlist this morning...

700 hp (along with some other things) beats the hybrid.

That's part of "some other things".
Like the article said, the 918 can't use all of its power all of the time, while the GT2 RS can. This IMO indicates that the "all gas" engine is the superior design.
BTW, if I were in the market for another sports car, I would without question want the new GT2 over a 918.

997TT by the same driver was 7:54, and the 6GT3 was also 7:54. 996GT2 was 7:46. All tests by Sport Auto with same driver, but different dates/conditions obviously.

I'd guess it'd be much higher than that.
Walter Rohrl in a 997 GT2 on R-compound tires was a few seconds above 7:30 IIRC.
991 TT-S on R-compound tires is slightly behind the 997 GT2.
Carrera GT isn't even at 7:30.
Gonna take a lot more than tires and brake fluid to get a 996TT in the same air as those cars.
