Default Diagnose This Cold Start Noise (w/Video)

Hi All,

I have this noise only when the car is started cold. The A/C is not on. The sound is coming from the right side of the engine - or so it seams.

Any thoughts on what this could be?

Also remember I have a check engine light on currently with codes - Secondary air injection bank 1 and bank 2 p0491 and p0492

Link to video -

Thanks for the help.

Sounds like a squeaky belt or tensioner...spray some WD-40 down on the belt see if it goes away.

I agree, this tool will make finding the pulley in question a breeze. Also works great to find boost leaks.

As in you think the tensioner is going, or needs adjustment?

The tensioner is not adjustable. It is spring loaded. As you correctly did, when they go bad you just replace the unit.

Sorry, didn't mean adjustment on the tensioner itself, wasn't sure if someone mean that the belt was slipping vs the tensioner itself going.

Looks like more maintenance for me..

I think its just the bearing on one of the 2 idler pulleys or the tensioner. The good news is you can buy just the bearing and save yourself some $$.

As a side note it could also be a guide pully.

Yep, thats why I think a $20 stethoscope is a wise investment. Once you put that rod on each pulley bolt you will instantly know which once is bad.

No worries. Rockauto.com has new idler pulleys for $23. If you do the replacement yourself be aware that the bolts that hold them in place might be reverse thread.

But before you do anything take nbressette's and Jferrante's advice and use a stethoscope and a little WD-40 to track down exactly what is making noise. It could be your air pump is on the way out which would explain the codes the car is throwing.

I had the same noise, and isolated to idler pulley. I changed all three though, $300 from Sunset.

The idler pulleys are a reasonable thing to asses.

I don't have experience with the secondary airpump, but since the airpump only runs when cold and you have a code related to the pump, have you you eliminated this?
