Gearing Change - My experience
#16
I have Matt's (GTgears) guard internals in my diff. A testament to his product, the diff was built over 4 years ago and was still in exceptional shape and according to Copans needed no attention at this time.
There's always bigger and badder equipment out there at track days but in my experience a well driven 996 GT3 can still hold it's own against the best of them.

I would say 4.0 R&P is easily the best bang for buck performance mod you can do to a 996 GT3. The autobahn spec factory final drive really doesn't do any favors for the low torque early 3.6 mezger.

Appreciate this post. Andy, one bit of feedback I'd like to hear is about the "seat of the pants" improvement in straight line speed/acceleration (for the guys like me who use their cars primarily as a fun and unique street car and who don't car about shaving tenths at a track). Would be interested in your thoughts on that, as doing a 4.0 rp or even the 3.89 effectively increases the torque of the car far beyond what can be achieved with any other "bolt on" type mods.
I'll agree that 2nd and 3rd are much more "awake" now on the street in the right situations, but it's really depends on the speed range you are in as to how much quicker the car feels.
I did some 40-140 pulls with a buddy in his modified C5 Z06 over the weekend. I used to lose to him in those efforts and now....I still lose to him :-) It keeps up better till about 120 or wherever I have to go to 5th gear now and when I hit 5th he starts to walk away. I have more rear wing in the car than when we did those pulls before so that could be a contributing factor.

Gears are the best modification that my car has. Can't imagine not having them now. I make sure to change the tranny fluid every spring before each season to make sure everything is in order and there are no significant metal shavings.

Andy, I am surprised it took you this long. Now I will struggle to stay with you at Mid-O. WGI is what I consider my home track and I might be able to hold you off there, but with this mod I am sure we would be very close.
Might be time for me to build that 4.2...........

The 4.0 R&P in a 996 GT3 is also one of my favorite mods. The best part about it in my experience from customers is that it makes 2nd gear much more useable. It drops 1-2-3rd gears from about 55-85-115 MPH to about 40-70-100 shorter tracks that are slower and or have many 30-35mph corners, this ring and pinion is excellent. I have installed many and have had several out for maintenance over the years and from normal track use I have yet to see one with accelerated wear that required replacement. Excellent mod for the street where you get to use more of the power and easier because you get up into the power and faster.
A 3-4-5 re gear or full 1-6 re gear also have their benefits but that really depends on your use and what benefit best suits you (and your wallet)

I also back this. Have it in my 997.1 which I think is the same gearbox as the 996.2 gearbox.
Re where to get it. For the factory 4.0 ring and pinion try Joe at Porsche Willoughby. Really though if you use a decent Porsche shop like PR tech or Austohaus Hamilton in Sydney, just get them to source and also then fit what you want. They do this sort of mod endlesslely. It's bread and butter for them.
