The 996 GT3 Cars For Sale Thread...

Paint
BAT claims that it unfairly penalize is the owner of the car and they cannot fetch as high as sale price but I guess they misrepresent in the car if it has a higher sales price then that is along with it but you know I’m kind of sick of all these online auctions. If you look at that red GT2 on cars and bids, I asked where the undercarriage photos were and paint meter readings and the DME and it got ignored. And then the previous owner shows up and admits the car had actually had the whole front half of it painted. And then I commented to the car had been painted and they flagged that too. Now car being painted is a material thing and a devalue is it especially whenever you’re paying a $20,000 premium for this car because it’s red.

Cars and Bids Guards Red '02 GT2
Thoughts on this car? 39,500 miles. No real documentation and not nearly enough photos IMO. Sure looks pretty though.

Here is my honest opinion. I like the car quite a bit. Its the right color (for me), it has driver mileage so I would not loose my shirt driving it, it has buckets, and the spec is good. The question marks being raised through the comments are really non-issues (to me at least). The problem I have with 996 gt2's in this range is that the prices they pull are too close (imho) to 997 gt2's. A clean title, no accident, 22k mile 997 gt2 sold recently on BAT for 236k (it had some cosmetic issues but it was mechanically sound when I test drove it for a buddy), and one before that with right around 30k miles (also black) went for 225k. But if a 996 is hovering around 200k (like the last red one on BAT, which was admittedly awesome), I'd probably just pay the extra and go for a 997 gt2 with some miles. 997's are just as rare, just as moddable, and I think will hold value over time just as well as 996's (if not better, if the 996 gt3 vs. 997 gt3 trends hold for gt2). The only real drawback of the 997 gt2's is that they are marginally less reliable than their 996 counterparts. Just like the 997 gt3's, the variocam plus cars just have a more going on and can suffer pretty expensive failures that 996 gt cars don't experience (like harmonics backing out flywheel and other bolts, spun cams that can block oil passages and create all kinds of carnage, etc...). Now, if this car were to go in the 150k range then I'd jump all over it because to me, 50-70k is a big jump in price and that money means something to me. But if the delta is only 20-30, I'd be hard pressed not to go with a 997.

agree. market is softening...but just not for 996 gt3's. Super clean scud just sold for 245k plus 5k in fees today. would have been closer to 275-285 six months ago. Silver 996 gt3 with nearly double the miles sold on BAT in February for 175k!

It's my experience that people don't know a #1 car from a #2. Mileage is one thing but this one raised a lot of questions that a #1 car should not.
Most here are too young to remember the Carrera RS doing some pretty serious ups and downs in the 80's and 90's. I could have bought a fully documented no bull**** documented real 73RS Touring for $72,000 in 2004. FF 10 years and I wish I had.
Buy and hold is still a good strategy, Weak hands lose out.
I watched the 930 Turbo market cave and then come back stronger than ever. A friend who was at Gooding at the time told me he was turning away 930's because owners were completely irrational when it came to the reserve values. Smart buyers scooped them up from those running for the door. All that was necessary was for time to pass and the inevitable rebound which did happen.
Having a historical perspective from 50 years in the car hobby is a good thing. YMMV
Good examples of all cars will sell for a premium. If you cannot discern the difference, ask for help before jumping in. I don't know it all but can find someone who does!
Carry on!

My old car. I say good buy, well cared for when I had it. Don’t think last owner drove it much. New owner in San Fran, contacted me on LinkedIn, small world.
