Default 996 GT3 battery behaviour

I have a stock GT3 battery installed - it must be a replacement - but I don't yet now what's normal behavior. New car to me, have had to boost twice so far but both times due to unusual circumstances - long term shop work, and a detailing session with multiple starts and doors/hood open for hours.

When I start the car normally, the ignition engages with a 1 second approximate slow-motion engagement before turning over quickly and starting. Is this normal, or a battery in need of replacement?

I would expect the a strong battery would turn over quickly on contact, and consistently. But maybe this is different?

Thanks in advance.

Cheers

Matt

It should crank fast and instantaneously. I have the stock Interstate replacement battery. Previous one failed, and was replaced under warranty. I would pull it and get it tested.

Could be other things like grounding/alt/starter. The engine/tranny/chassis is fabulous it's the ancillaries that seems to have a short life : (. Mike

The delay is normal if it turns over strong. You might want to check if the previous owner left
an anti theft (tracking)device installed which may be sucking the juice from your battery. Put a battery
maintainer on it if you are going to leave it for anything more than a few days.

I leave mine on a maintainer all of the time. I thought it was a bad battery when it was slow to turn over. I pulled it out and saw that it was an Optima Red top from 07/07. The maintainer is a necessity with these cars.

Thanks guys - it's now on a maintainer going forward. Will keep an eye on it. Also will look into the sluggish starter on initial contact - maybe a sign the battery has in fact been running low.

And yes, car had Lojack installed previously. I am going to have Andrew take a look see and "undo".

I honestly had a chuckle when I read the owners manual that explains the 5 day maximum immobile period after which the car even shuts down the keyless remote functionality. You know they designed this thing on the light side...

Cheers

Matt, buy and new battery, you don't want to be stuck with dead battery in the middle of no where.. Or at the track.

Matt, I experinced th same behavior to a point that the engine seemed to die everytime a I attempted to start it. This stopped the moment I replaced the battery, so you might just want to do it.

However, the car typically sucks juice no matter what you do. As the alarm system cannot be turned off, I meanwhile do not lock the car anymore and leave it open in my private garage. Thereby the alarm is off and the battery lasts a lot longer.

Hi guys - yup, behavior persisted even with a maintainer. Load tested today and it's shot. New Interstate en route.

This is really silly to be asking battery questions, but I have only owned old 911's and 944's and this is really a different deal in terms of operating behavior. The 5-day factory shut-off of the key fob is just 1 example. Lots to learn.

Cheers

Lock the car. The things running in the background don't really go to sleep until you do this. A battery maintainer is a must. I have them on all cars and bikes. Pretty sure CTEK supply the Porsche Tequipment chargers. I like this one.
