I think its due to the flash, but not knowing I would steer clear of that car. I was looking for sub 100 type 2 revs when buying my TT. I never found a car with zero, but never ran into a car with more than 300. I was only looking at stock cars with no performance mods.

Just going back to first principles, and given a little knowledge can be dangerous, I'd be grateful if anyone could confirm/refute what is written below.

I've been told that the dme over rev counts the number of spark ignitions?
Range 1 6750 to 7250rpm
Range 2 over 7250 rpm ?
as listed in the DME manual. think the 997's changed later on by categorised into 6 ranges of over rev 200-300 rpm increments.

6cyl will see 3 sparks /rev for a 4 stroke ?

6673 occurance / 3 sparks per rev =2224 revolutions
at 7250 rpm, that's about 20 sec during the car's life above over rev limit.
Given the GT2 is a race car, probably been used per design intent and tracked. 20 sec out of 1000 hours, some quite recently....

What are some of the bad things that can happen with over rev?
Valve kisses piston, Crunch. Fuel management system leans out ? Fatigue of wrist pins? I can't answer this, but in the old days, without computers many engines survived, a few didn't. I guess the question I'd ask is, would it be obvious if the engines/gearbox has had been hurt ie a missed downshift ?

This could be all BS but talking to the right people will provide you with some clarity

The above is correct for a 996 GT2. For a 996 GT3, the rev ranges are significantly higher (8,200-8,800 and >8,800).

Yes, the 997 series has 6 over-rev ranges. Depending on the exact model, and the range, some of the revs vary by as little as 200 RPM, while others in the range 4-6 vary by as much as 1,000 RPM or more in that range.

If I knew for certain the number of range 2 over revs (6673 in this case) was a result of only touching 7250 rpm, I really wouldn't sweat it. For all I know some of those ignitions could have been at 9000 rpm. Also, the time since last occurrence only being 10 hours is unsettling. I'm far from being an expert on this, but those far more versed than I advised to walk away.

BTW, still no deposit refund. Seems to be a work in progress.

Also the type 1 at 65535 is suspect, that's a magic number in software, 0xFFFF or 2^16-1, plus it's only a few minutes from the current run time. Looks like a reset to me. Or some sort of other error.

If he refuses to refund the deposit, please post the dealer's name here on Rennlist. There are a lot of us that would like to know, I suspect.

Will do. For now I am giving the guy the benefit of the doubt, I can't believe a dealership would risk their reputation over a few bucks.

Kerry, you're too nice of a guy. Give the a$$hat 24 hours to refund your money, or you go public on every Porsche board you can find.

Good news, I got my deposit back !!

It took a week and a number of email exchanges, but I've been made whole. Aside from our disagreement about what constituted a major issue in reference to the PPI, my other exchanges with the dealer were pleasant enough. I felt I had negotiated a good price on the car, and he did offer to repair the remaining squawks found on the PPI before closing.

Perhaps my mention of this forum and 'going public' may have provided some motivation to issue the refund, I'm just happy to have closure and ready to move on. This is suppose to be fun, right?! Back in the hunt..
