GT2 PPI and overrevs
Considering the purchase of an '02 GT2 with about 28,000 miles. Had a PPI done, it was discovered it has a high number of over revs..
Range 1 65535/997.4
Range 2 6673/986.9
Current operating hours 997.6
I am guessing the high number of range 2 indicates it has been re-flashed to increase the rev limit. The remaining items on the PPI are minor.
I am debating if it's worth having a compression/leak down test. The Porsche dealer that did the PPI wants about $1300 to conduct both tests. The short time frame from the last range 2 over rev is concerning.
At this stage I am inclined to walk away from the deal, guess I am just looking for some reassurance this is the right move. I really like the car and it is very well equipped with factory options. I thought I had found 'the one' for me.
FWIW, the seller (not the Porsche dealer) is refusing to refund my $500 deposit if I walk away. The deposit was given with the agreement it would only be refundable if a "major" item was discovered during the PPI. I contend this is major, he claims it is not.
Thanks for any guidance/suggestions!

The fact that the seller would not refund a deposit is reason enough not to pursue the deal. That's not how ethical people do business.
Remember, buy the seller. Not just the product (car).

Hey Kerry,
I agree the deposit issue isn't right but doesn't mean I'd run exactly.
Where are you located, or are you comfortable posting(or PM'ing) a link to the car?
Cheers,
Rob

How was the deposit paid? If paid by personal check, stop payment, and go find the right car for you. It's all about the hunt anyways.

I appreciate the feedback. I was on the fence if walking away was the right move, good to know others would do the same.
Deposit was paid for via PayPal, seller is a dealer in Florida that sells used high end cars. Short of pursuing a refund of my deposit through legal channels, I may just have to chalk this up to another one of life lessons.

Try to leverage the seller giving your deposit back by telling him you will not bad mouth the car on Rennlist.
If he keeps your money, you go public and LOUD.
Refund, you keep hushed.

I can't believe they won't give you your deposit back. The deposit is there for you to hold the car while you do your due diligence and that's it. They don't get to decide what you as the buyer consider a major issue... particularly when talking about a high end and rare car. Did they disclose the DME numbers before you had it checked personally? If not, I can't see their side of this. $500 isn't the end of the world but I'd be very annoyed.
What's the name of the dealer? Please let us know so we don't do business with them.

The DME numbers were not known until my PPI. I too am surprised at the resistance I've met in refunding the deposit. Think I will use some of the strategies suggested here to make myself whole…

Someone at that dealership has been thrashing that car. How long have they had it? You could file a complaint with PayPal on your deposit. I'd definitely walk....
