I do have the PFC rotors which I believe are floating. Again, this wasn't just a little rattle sound. It was a sound that makes you immediately pull the car off the road or track.

Somehow I doubt this little spring thing is the issue. If so I would imagine this would have occured with the PFC 06 pads.

I'm guessing it's the caliper clip that's missing and it's just the pads rattling.

The rear pads on the FD can make some terrible noise with just that little V clip missing so I can imagine those big front pads making some very disturbing sounds.

If the sound goes away when you apply the brakes that's another good indication that it's simply the pads vibrating against the rotors and calipers.

Anywho hopefully it's nothing serious

Anyone driving with BMW tarheel next month?

No update. Haven't had a chance to follow up.

Fritz send me your track schedule for 2013. Hopefully you can do a David Murry event.

FWIW, if the flat spring on top of the pads is not pressing down enough you get a load rattle. Does the rattle go away if you have your foot on the brake pedal? If yes, simply bend the spring to apply more pressure. Another source of front end rattles which sound deadly is the drop link bolts on the GT3. They have to be very tight and they get loose with time.

Best,

Let me get more details from the shop. Something must be wrong....maybe it is the wrong size pad.
did you take out the metal spring plate b/n the back of pad and the cross pin? if you took that out, put it back in. then the noise will reduce a lot.

supposedly this is the problem but I have not verified first hand. What bothers me is the fact that the plate/spring has NEVER been there and I have never had this issue till now. I have always used PFC pads, except this time it was with the new 08s.

Maybe I'll pick up the car this weekend.

You probably didn't have the issue until some pad material wore down. When my 6GT3 was basically 100% track, I ran with no pad retainers so the pads would float instead of rest against the rotor. Anything to get that extra mph! By the way, they were noisy and annoying as all get out setup that way. I have never run that way again

Ok everyone I just wanted to close this topic out and confirm that the awful noise was due to the fact that I didn't have the clips in the calipers that keep the pads in position. Thanks for all the help and feedback. I guess I was in denial because this issue should have come up already as I have been using PFC pads for 5 years now without the clips.

thx.

thanks for the info. i also do not have clips and knock back comes and goes. Sometimes with new pads sometimes with worn pads and sometime in between. I'm used to it now and deal with it when appears as I do love the PFC pads feel and longevity.
