Default Interesting fuel tank factoid

If you run low. I mean real low. Like I did when I was about to put the GT3 away for winter and get gas at a gas station near where I store the car on my way back from giving it a bath you too will learn the km/mi to empty is pretty accurate.

I was low but not out.

I did learn however the fuel pump is cooled by the gasoline itself.

No gas = no cooling = fried fuel pump.

Less than 24,000km on the car.

Expensive learning experience.

Coincidence.

With 24000km on the car/fuel pump a fuel pump failure at this mileage falls into the new car failure category even though of course the car is out of warranty on time but it still has covered way under the 50K miles.

While the pump is cooled by the gasoline there's a limit to how long you can run the engine with fuel very very low. Hard to believe one exposure to running "hot" fried the pump.

Now if you made a habit of running the fuel tank level low a lot over time this would probably shorten the fuel pump's life.

But, FWIW, I've run a 16.9 gallon tank low enough to require 15.625 gallons of gasoline without any problems and many times low enough to require over 14 gallons of gasoline. 'course, most of the time I fill up pretty soon after the low fuel level warning light comes on and advise others to do the same.

Anyhow, more likely what happened was the pump was just due to fail.

Sincerely,

Macster.
