Default Smog failed - all values high

The guy at the station I went to suggested the cats might be bad. Does that sound plausible?

Do the cats rattle on start up? That would be another clue.

Get it scanned through the OBD2. See if there are any emissions codes before you start throwing parts at the car.

No rattling from the cats. I'll take it into a shop to have them look it over before buying anything

Now that I think about it perhaps I didn't heat the car up long enough. I only drove 2 miles to the smog station.

That could easily be the answer - my GT3RS has done over 60k miles on the same cats and they still work so well that the air coming out of the exhaust is cleaner than that going into the air intake!

Oh, yeah. Drive that car enough to get it good and hot before you take it to be smogged.

From the time I leave the house until after the process is over the engine doesn't get turned off.

I pick a warm day and drive around until the smog station is not busy and I can get my car into the smog check bay without any delay.

I even let the engine idle while I get the process started.

Oh, and another thing: Leave the A/C off.

Sincerely,

Macster.
