Hi Francois,

Your R1 experience is real interesting. Curious if you've exceeded the Hoosier HC threshold (20ish) with the R1's with grip and rubber remaining. Sound like the R1's may be a viable option in my quest to find Hoosier like grip with reasonable longevity and without the tire life shortening sidewalls splits. I'm 4 HC's into my Kuhmo experiment and too early to say how they stack up but so far so good. Was planning to use them for 3 days at Road America this past weekend, but had a trailer incident on the way there and never made it Anyways, please keep us posted on your R1 experiences.

BTW, where did you get the dive planes ?

Hey Steve, good eye on the dive planes. Got them from 911SLOW, bought them at the same time as the shifter.

Spoke to the product manager at Hoosier about the sidewall split issue. He was adamant that tires need to be run at 36 - 38 hot (actually I argued him down to 36, he was saying 38 - 40).

He also said that 295 was too narrow for a Porsche, that with the weight we carry back there we should have at least 305, and that camber should not exceed -2 ish, if I remember correctly.

I love the R1's, only problem is the limited sizing options.

And you please keep us posted on the Kuhmo experience.

Sorry to hear about the trailer incident.

The one time I drove on R1 was FR500S at Miller and the tires had good grip but didn't feel as tossable as an R6. R1 IMHO does not like or tolerate as much slip angle as R6.

Will do re the Kuhmos. Next up is Mid-O in a couple of weeks, so hoping to add another 15ish HC's. As for the Hoosiers, I always run them at 36-38 hot, but when I spoke with Hoosier last fall, they indicated that it was the low cold pressures 25-28 and cold temps that was causing the problem. Interesting their opinion on the rear sizes and camber. I've only ever run 315's with -3 deg on the rear and was under the impression that this was in the Hoosier sweet spot. Maybe not based on your conversation with them. I can live with the 20-25 HC's from Hoosiers if they didn't spin on the wheels and split prematurely, but because they do spin and split, the search continues....

to Big Al for initiating this thread and Francois for sharing real world information.

Im kind of thrilled at the thought of getting R1s shipped to the border without getting raped with additional import taxes.

Looking forward to hearing Steve's comments on the khumo's.

Thank-you mates!

Yes, Hoosiers spinning on the rims

First morning at VIR, vibration was terrible as I reved out 5th. After lunch, when I put on the R1's, vibration was gone, and I felt good enough to shift in to 6th on the back straight

Interesting thread. I ran 3 sets of kuhmos then Hoosiers over summer. Maybe fl heat but weren't that impressed Hoosiers (315 in back) compared to Kuhmos. and the heat at Sebring I'm guessing is the fault or maybe setup. I have a set of kuhmos and Hoosiers on 2 separate sets. Might try to run them back to back to compare same day.

Very interesting observation. Curious how many HC's you got from the Kuhmos and how their grip held up. I've heard conflicting opinions between 15 and 30+ HC's. Any insight appreciated.

I sell the R6, R1, and Kumhos and always love the feedback on thread like this. Being a non-racer (no time!) it's feedback like this that allows me to extend to other customers calling in.

Thanks for the feedback, guys.

thanks damon just ordered another set of hoosiers after learning today that sidewalls are separating after only 12 HC's! (put your name as reference)

DHI only ran 3 sets kuhmos and one set of hoosiers and extrapolating times from other people summer heat vs winter here, i think hoosiers are about 1 sec faster than kuhmos at sebring a 2:20's track...

i've had a couple flats on kuhmos, large bubbles on nittos, and now this separation in hoosiers..running pressure c/w rennlisters...
set up ok

i corded last set of kuhmos after 16 hc's ..

Gavin on 997gt3 forum has the quoted 30-40 hc's but his car is very light with soft highly developed suspension so my guess i will never see that...

Boinkus, kuhmos seem to hold their grip well but i seem to cord , get flat or separate tires before they HC out....

once i get the hoosiers i might try back to back sessions to compare

Too bad there are limited sizes to the BFG R1's, I hear nothing but good things about it.

Damon, I am confused: Your web site give a width of 11.5" for the 285/30, but 10.4" for the 335/30??? However, the section width is ~2" more on the 335 than on the 285.

There's got to be a typo in there somewhere?

Would 245, 335 be a good combo for the 996 GT3? Other than wheel well clearance, we need the diameters to be very close on this car, otherwise, the ABS is not too happy.
