Anything will pull a Trailex
Wide or Narrow Trailex will work, it depends on what you find, and how much it is. If you get new, get wide
TRY TO PLAN AHEAD
I got an open Trailex, bought a new 1500 GMC, sold the Trailex, bought an 26' Alu enclosed, and bought another new truck, this time a Ram 2500 Diesel Crew (I LOVE it; great truck, great value). All within 2 years, so not the best financial move, duh.
I too was a bit worried about safety and hence never even towed the enclosed, loaded up, with the 1500. Drove back from Tremblant last week at 120kmh the whole way. The truck feels solid and planted with a good weight distribution hitch and dual-cam sway control. The trailer has a GVWR of 10,000 lbs with 2 x 5,000lbs axles. Yeah, it's overkill, but I certainly don't have to worry about being at the limit. And my nicely-appointed Laramie came with a front bench, so it seats 6.
There are no savings in buying small and eventually going big. You might as well skip the interim steps and go big right off the bat. It's actually cheaper.
Do you have space to park these things, can you live with a truck or would you rather an SUV, and what other vehicles do you have?
How about a motor home to pull the trailer, and to allow you to spend some quality family time at the track? Yeah, I know, that's jumping a few steps, but your kids are at the right age...

Francois,
you got me dialed in, I can't tell you how many times in the past year my daughter has asked me to get a motorhome to go "camping".
It has been discussed and looks like its back on the table again.
I might have to start buying my banks' stock again

Consider a 3/4 ton suburban/Yukon if you are thinking suv which I think you should be if you are getting an open trailer
2nd row bench seat (now you have 5 in seat belts), remove 3rd row and you have covered, lockable, guaranteed dry storage...
In the event that you switch trailers to a smaller enclosed, the 3/4 ton suburban can take it...
In the end with a big family a suburban/Yukon xl has its advantages
A duramax/Allison 3/4 or 1 ton suburban/yukon xl would be a home run for me if it existed

I have checked out all of the conversions I can find - I like the custom autos by Tim excursions
Sent them an email for quote to convert my 11 Denali 3500 - $45k just for the conversion
I still do not understand why ford or GM do not make a big suv with a big diesel a la excursion etc
I believe there is a market as evidenced by strength of used pricing and number of conversions being done
I would pay $75k for a one ton diesel Yukon xl factory built
Need 3 row vehicle that can tow and is diesel - does not exist today

Actually your "quest" Tow Rig does exists,
You can have a 2500 ESV
[IMG][/IMG]
Anything from mild to WILD
[IMG][/IMG]
We build them day in day out. Most of our work is NBS but it is all Duramax SUV's like these.
[IMG][/IMG]
And they are all 100% GM AUTHENTIC! No aftermarket nonsense under the hood.
[IMG][/IMG]
On the 2007-Current you can plan on investing 20-24K into the conversion process (which icedently enhances the resale value by the same amount) and you wont lose a dime in value. That's the nice thing about DuraBurb's, they hold their value.
If you want brand new we are currently going into negotiations with a local GM dealer to bring the Duramax Suburban back on a limited platform.
Just though I'd let you know since it seemed like you gave up hope but your Diesel SUV is out there, its just a phone call away

Call you next week about my 3500 Denali that I already own
Thank you for posting
Edit: done a little more homework... Let me know when the new ones you are in negotiations with the dealer on
You are not converting existing diesel trucks into 3 row SUVs, you are putting dmax engines in donor suburbans
