Correct on the differences in the manufacturing process. Between 1999 and 2000 1858 Mk1 GT3s were built. The first 1350 in 1999 and when the factory had another production gap in September - November 2000 they made another 508 .

But the body of the mk2 is more rigid and heavier.
The mk2 is built around a modified version of the facelifted -2002 carrera 4 shell. Key modifications included additional welded sections on the rear cross-member, which provide a more even distribution of loads from the engine and gearbox. The rear bulkhead was also been modified to accommodate the dry-sump reservoir on the engine.
Since the 911 Carrera 4 shell includes a range of reinforcements introduced on all 911 Carrera variants as from MY02 (e.g. door sills, roof frame and seat wells), it was possible to achieve a 25% improvement in static flexural strength and torsional rigidity in the mk2 compared with the mk1.

As I said before, weight aside, the mk2 was improved in specs in every category. But.. it doesn't feel or drive like a mk1.

The original GT3 is the most important road car in Porsche's modern history and a damn fine driving machine.
+1 here is my '99 CS at the BMW Intl Fahrer School @ the Ring in 2001... as you may notice, there is something "unusual" about this particular car!

Yup, early cup cars ('98) had it. I have a picture somewhere.

Does anyone else have any comments on this? I haven't had the time yet to take the airbox off to see the butterfly valve, but I had a friend depressing the throttle all the way down, and when putting my hand on the cable link on the intake it could actually be turned some more....

A few updates,

As I understand it, plugging the car into diagnostics will allow you to see what percentage of throttle the car is actually getting.

The very first Cup cars did indeed use a rod operated shifter (a pretty bad set up apparently)

I've now got two Mk1 GT3's. One the afforementioned much modified black version running Mk2 six pot calipers, Alcons 362mm floating discs and RS29 Pads, Cup Toe Links, Ohlins four way adjustables, Manthey K400 engine conversion, Manthey Billet Quickshift, 997 GT3 Cup rear top mounts, ClubSport rear cage and MPS Cups.

Recently I bought an original panel and paint SY car that is completely stock :

There was indeed a problem with the throttle cable, look in my thread here:

The maximum value displayed will be 85%. You should adjust the cable at either end to obtain this.

Both cars are "comfort" models with bucket seats. Though the black car is closer to an RS than a Club Sport !
