My seals are all shot, and some of the pucks no longer hold in place. I haven't investigated, but would replace the seals if I could find them... easily.

In the mean time, I use painters tape to hold the pucks in place when I change the pads. I remove the tape afterward.

Reviving this - a few of my outer seals are gone, but the pucks are still in place. I didn't notice any binding of the pistons, and the car stops well. I assume others have lost the outer seals that hold the pucks and kept on driving as well.

I lost a few and things seem fine.

Bought a set of outer seals (dust covers, really) to hold the pucks in place when replacing pads. Works so far, but not hoping for them to live too long.
