I was advised by him and by Pete Stout of Excellence magazine either to buy a 996 GT3 or a 997.2GT3, but skip the 997.1
I bought a pristine 996 GT3 and it's currently at RSS for some mods
Well, yesterday we had a track day with our local Porsche Club. A friend lent me his 997.1 GT3 for 5 laps; it felt soft, a bit too refined for my taste being a GT3
I am glad I got myself the 996 version

I agree with John. Had a 996 GT3, sold it and bought the 997.1 RS - a more versatile car but no better on the track. The 997.2 GT3 and RS are a notch quicker. You bought the right car in MHO!

Glad you are enjoying it.
For the type of use you had in mind, it was a fairly easy choice.
Have fun and stay safe!

I recall saying this a few years ago and couldn't find anyone to agree with me. In regards to the 997.1 GT3 it only felt bigger, bit stronger in hp and more responsive with the steering. Everything else about the 996 GT3 felt better to me including the road feel, driver feedback/connection and overall experience.
I don't think we will ever see the rawness of the 996 GT3 again, how awesome that would be to have that car with the specs of the new generation (3.8 or 4.0, wide body, suspension enhancements, no nannies, and headlights!). Now that would be magical.

Bore out the 996 GT3 engine to a 4.0 and make the car a stripper. That is perfection!
