No doubt, we have to blame the French..
It all started in September 1964 when Peugeot notified that they had exclusive rights for model designations with two numbers and a zero between them.. 901 would have been much more convenient as a staring point.

So why not the "998"? Seems like the next step, no? I guess they could only have one more model after that before things got really crazy!

I was at the Ruf Factory and Alois Ruf explained this to our group about the 901 issue. I believe there are other auto companies that use these numbers with their models. As Americans, we are not aware of these since most are not sent here.

Porsche is an Engineering Company in addition to a car builder. There are many projects both internal and external they work on. The 991 just happens to be the internal number assigned to the new 911. Just like 993, 996 were at the time of their development...

I totally get that but in most cases it follows a normal pattern of ascending numbers. The 986 boxster to the 987, the 964 to 993 to 996 to 997...
BMW's E30, E36, E46, E90 etc...
It's no big deal, it's just funny. That is all.

Hammered like in snow? Yeah it's going to be a crap drive home. And it's january...not a huge sales month...time for budgets, pay plans and all that fun stuff. I don;t smoke and I eat in so these are my breaks. meanwhile I just end up staying later or coming in earlier to get my work done so really I'm screwing myself. I'm very efficient in the summer....

901/0 - 5-speed transmission for the 901/911
915 - stronger 4 or 5 speed transmission for 911
