U are nuts to run R888 to the cords

The tire is made out of two different types of compund, the good stuff is above the wear bars.....the ice below

VERY different from Nt01 or RA1.......I would rather crawl around the track then risk my life on R888

My advise to you is to remove that POS tire and but NT01....then run to the cords

Interesting as Toyo actually suggests shaving the tire (i.e., semi-slick) in competition to gain lap time. Where are you getting your information from?

Idk about the two different compounds but with R888's they heat cycle out which NT-01 and RA-1 won't do. As a matter of fact those two tires are fastest right before they cord

R888's get pretty slippery after 15-20 heat cycles. They'll go 35-40 heat cycles on most cars before cording but they are not fun to run on in the end.

Phil, I don't know where Izzone is coming from but I promise that R888s can be run until they are slick and beyond - while practicing in my boxster spec racer (which up till now have been required to use R888) I have done it often. Yes they do deteriorate towards the ends of there lives but they remain predictable - just slower. Like others have mentioned your tires look like new and I don't even see where you are seeing the bars. I buy my race tires shaved and by the time I have done a 2 or 3 lap scub in they look worse than yours do.

They do have reached the wear marker., so I thought that once the wear marker was reached they were about to be dead, but if you tell me they look new to you then that is good news.

I just always check that box on the tech sheet before track days where they ask you to make sure your tire have not reach the wear mark so I assume after that they would not be safe to use.

This is my first set of 'racy tires' and I need to drive the car back from the track so I want to make sure I have a good margin before they die on me.

Do you think it is ok to run them until they cord ?

Shoot, you are just breaking those in. Lots of life left. If you go GT3 lower control arms you can dial in more - camber.

I stumbled upon a super cheap set of PSS9 but I was also looking for a set of gt3 suspensions but could not find any bargain

Anyways it is a matter of time before I get into a GT3 car... I have been looking but again nothing really interesting coming up, I hope the new 991 and the winter time will bring up some bargains.

Maybe it's best not to upgrade if in the near future you're getting a gt3. Since u are a beginner suggest keeping it the way it is and perfecting your skills. Mike

The Toyo 888 tires are so much more fun on the track than the street tires, mainly because I can finally brake hard without locking the wheels.

I feel that the two things I wish I had are stiffer suspensions and a wing in the back for the fastest turns.

The upgrade to a GT3 version would bring me those two things and also the dry sump engine for reliability and use of slick tires. But this will cost me +-$20k, so $1k for PSS9 and $2k for wings might be my short term route

Try keeping your hot pressures under 35 psi with the 888's. I think you will find more grip there, but YMMV.

Philoo, I've run R888's for the last 3 years. R888's have very very stiff sidwalls and thus do not require a lot of negative camber.

Also R888 like lower psi than what you are running. Anything over 36psi the rear center waters fast and the tires loose grip.

Although I run a 997 based car things shouldn't be too different. I had the best wear with R888 with these specs:

Front camber -2.3
Front toe zero to no more than .5mm out

Rear Camber -1.8
Rear toe no more than 2mm in per side

Hot PSI 32 front 34 rear

Other than that...once you wear out the R888 you should use Nitto N101 tires...they are much better and you can run them to the cords. R888's are doe when they reach the wear bars or at around 16-20 heat cycles

thanks, those are great information for my next alignment.

What are your setting for the Nittos? I am looking into buying a set of OZ alleggerita (8.5" - 10.5") in order to be able to mount the Nitto minumum rear size.

You have plenty of tread for sure, count your heat cycles on them. Every time I've run them on cars they've lost grip (heat cycled out) well before they were out of tread.
