996 or 997 GT3 - Looking to get back into one
#16
Street it as a daily driver, and perhaps do the DE every once in a while.
One thing that drove me batty about the 996 was that it was noisy, and I could not just "listen to the radio" every so often. heaven forbid actually trying to take a phone call....

I had a speed yellow 2004 GT3 that I used as a daily driver, and put about 20k miles on it. As I said, the only complaint was when I was on a long highway drive - it was tough not having a good radio and music to listen to.
Blasphemy I know, but on some of those trips, I'd put on the Bose headphones and rock the iPod.
I have been seeing the 996's dip into the 49k range. I am thinking that 55k is a bit much for the GT3's out there. Particularly with the pressure from the new 991's, and the other, newer GT3's that are out there.
My buddy has a 997 GT3, and I have to say the look of that car is very, very nice. But having PASM concerns me. I mean, really, it's a GT3 - isn't not having PASM the point? GRIN

i show you...
dont just give roses, you have to give it well.
do not send a dozen, too $$$, you got to get more mileage out of the USD. fuel and mods are $$$
avoid tiffany.
the eternity ring diamonds fall off
the solitaire cracks.
coach so much cheaper and equally effective.

^ you should always make it easy and paste a link.
Anyway, I am by no means a 996 snob, and the 997.1 is just as good as the 996 as a track car, but... I would really be concerned about PSM intervention and obstructionism, not to mention the chewing up of the rear brake pads. No question that the 997 makes a better street car, and all of the mechanical stuff can be tweaked for the track, but it's the electronics that I'm worried about...?
OP, PCCBs are nice to have, but in my humble, they add more to the selling price of the car than to the driving experience... YMMV.

996 and 997.1 are both noisy, but the 997.1 is louder. I think the 996 is a sweeter car to drive (due to lack of PASM dampers), but the 997.1 looks better (inside and outside), and has more power.

Thanks, I guess that PSM is for regular Carreras?
Wasn't there an "issue" that, even if you did turn off TC and SC (if it has that), they were never really off, and would still intervene?
I thought that one of the "improvements" with the 997.2 was that these systems would stay off when selected off v. with the 997.1, and that the intervention thresholds were effectively pushed back when selected on...?

I shopped for 2 years before picking up a 996 GT3 this summer. Prices bottomed over 18 months ago and have steadily gone up since. There will be some good deals out there throughout the winter months but if you don't make a move on one before march they will once again bounce back up. Currently the sub $50k cars in the market are truely below average cars. $50-55k is what it takes to get a nice example. 991 won't have any effect on it just as the 997.2 3.8 cars and 4.0 didn't have any effect on it. 996 GT3's are more and more in demand these days and there are less and less to choose from.

just my 02, non tracked cars are worth over 50 but tracked cars should be under..
I am also in same situation, looking for a gt3 for mostly track use, but having a hard time buying a 6 in the 50's with 25 to 35k miles when I have seen a few 7 for 65 to 70 with same miles.
For the record I have owned a 6 and driven several 7's. I have been tracking an 01 Carrera for 3 years now, when I was forced to downsize. My 6 was under warranty and cpo so I like that piece of mind..

Please see below. The 997.2 GT3, and especially the 997.2 GT3 RS, have a better suspension set-up than the 997.1 cars. I still like the purity of the 996 GT3. It is old school, with no electronic aids except ABS.
Thanks, I guess that PSM is for regular Carreras? You are correct.
Wasn't there an "issue" that, even if you did turn off TC and SC (if it has that), they were never really off, and would still intervene? It was only TC, and it is completely off once you hit the button. The issue with the rear brakes is when you run with TC on - it will start cooking the rear brakes.

You may be correct that the intervention threshold is higher (later) in the 997.2 cars with TC on. The 997.2 cars also have PSM, but it is completely off when switched off.
