Default Alternator woes? Another track day shot to hell...

Track day at a local track has been lost due to probable alternator failure.

What do you guys think?...

Got to track with the voltage reading off the dash at approximately 11v and dropping closer to 10v as the car sat idling for 5-10 minutes. With the fear of getting stranded there, I chanced it to head back for home. Driving at highway speeds brought the Voltage up to 11v and every stoplight pulled it back down to close to 10v.

Lost a track day but at least I MADE IT HOME!

Battery is new from this spring and car has been started very week and spent half of those weeks on the trickle charger. I doubt the battery is bad. We'll confirm that with an overnight charge.

Searched the 6GT3 forum at it appears there has been some failures in the past.

Anything special I'm missing here other than a bad alternator before I shell out 500 bones to but a replacement? I will search locally for someone that could rebuild it possibly.

Sorry for the rant, Thanks for listening.

David,

Funny you should post this. My alt starts charging at app 13.5v and then drops off after a while to less than 12 volts going to pull it this weekend and get it checked out. Battery takes a good charge and is less than a year old.

Get it rebuilt. $250. New one from a Porsche dealer is like $1400.

Most of the Rennsport guys either replaced or rebuilt theirs. Including mine with only 12,000km on the car.

BTW it's a Bosch part. You can get it from a Bosch service centre much cheaper should you want a new one.

David,

If you haven't already done so, send your diff out to Guard this winter and get it rebuilt. You will notice a difference.

I can help you spend more money if you like. Just give me a call.

Sorry David, I can't help you with your electrical woes, but it's past time that you got that trailer.

So I guess that you managed to resist the Ford employee pricing Good call on the ML. GL too big?

A bunch of Montreal guys are coming to Mosport on Monday...

E550. Nice car.

I'm in California going to Rennsport Reunion IV next weekend. Back to work on the 18th.

The sane happened to me. Turned out the wire on the alternator had come loose.

Hi David,

Just happened to me last week. Replaced the voltage regulator and all is well again. Worth taking a chance on replacing the inexpensive regulator versus the possibility of rebuilding a perfectly good alternator.

Thank-you,
I've gotten this same advice earlier today.
Where did you get the regulator?

Take day off work, $250 for the track day...mechanical failures suck. BTDT 3 times over 115 track days

Hi David,

Pelicanparts has the voltage regulator for less than $40. Naturally, the Dealer will be quite a bit more.

FYI, I remember reading that idling while on the grid for long periods shortens alternator life. I replaced mine (yes with the $1200 dealer part). I now turn off the ignition while waiting for a track session to start until a few minutes to go time.

Thanks Randy,
Good info!
My understanding is that the stealership doesn't even offer the regulator separately.

Yeah regulator doesn't even show up in the PET. By the PET the GT3 uses a different alt part # than the regular 996 and TT. I think it is in the pulley though not the regulator. Any way mine checked out fine at the shop but as it seems to work ok when cold i am changing the regulator any way.
