I'm going to rebuild my LSD in the winter, and is wondering if the Carbonetic is something to consider.

IMHO there are only 2 options for the LSD in these cars:

1. Guards
2. PMNA clutch packs

Guess most people consider the "advantages" of the Carbonetics as more of a hype than the real deal. :-)

IIRC, my parts and labor all in was about $800.

 

Just one point of clarity here. If you buy a Carbonetics LSD, that's different than a rebuild. In addition to the cost of the new LSD you need to account for $1000+/- of labor to install the LSD since it will require resetting your ring gear backlash and bearing preload. It's not just a drop in unit.

Rebuilding on the other hand, regardless of whether they are our components or Porsche's uses your existing housing, and doesn't change any of your key ring and pinion setttings. The labor for this process is just the R&R of the LSD and an hour or two to rebuild it, versus the R&R of the stock LSD, resetting of the ring gear to install the Carbonetics, and then resealing the gearbox. This is why a lot more members here have used our rebuild kit versus buying one of our all new billet units. There's nut job track junkies like PJS who will have nothing but pure motorsports parts in his car, but for most of the population, a hybrid built on the factory LSD casing is adequate.

The correct cup friction-disk set costs around 350eur depending on the source.

Last time it was used, was on the 2002 cup cars. 2003 and on have a higher preload set which is only suitable for 100% track.

I recently had a customer try to get that set through PMNA for his 2004 Cup Car. He was told that it's NLA and superceded to the current 997 option only. Maybe it's different overseas, but here in the States it appears to be discontinued.

Yes I know, fortunately here the 2002 part is still available, but I'm not sure for how long. If they stop producing it or run out of stock, Porsche doesn't have an alternative solution for a low/medium preload steel clutch set... the market will be all yours..

The newer versions are too much, for a non dedicated track car..
