Place your bets. GT2 V. Cup car???
I should have the GT2 in a couple of weeks....
For some time I have been thinking about building the ultimate track/race car that I could also enter in OLOA--ie it needs to have plates and insurance. I thought long and hard about a Corvette ZR1, a new BMW 1M and several other cars but finally came back to Porsche. A good friend, excellent racer(Grand Am) and owner of the best BMW tuner shop told me in no uncertain terms that I would never be able to make a street car as fast as a race car. I respectfully (and I did say respectfully) disagreed.
Why couldn't you take a GT2, strip out carpet, headliner and all parts that do not make it go fast and make it faster than a Cup car? The up side with a GT2 is that has a street car VIN and I can get plates for it in AR without an inspection. Well, I found a GT2 that is pushing well over 600hp, has a full cage and fiberglass fenders, hood, doors and rear deck with a GT3 Cup wing. The GT2 now has a full monoball suspension with double adjustable JRZ shocks with remote reservoirs, huge Brembo brakes, lexan windows all around etc.
So the question is, can the GT2 out run a 996 GT3 Cup car? What say you?

I don't see any reasons why it can't be faster..
Strip it down to Cup level, lose weight by changing out fenders and such.. maybe even widen it (see 911SLOW's thread!) and put in the full weld on cage.. and you got something that's like a 6Cup w/ 200 more horsepower... !

I love all of this this video but for your query watch the start of a this POC race at Cal Speedway starting at the 1:20 mark. The camera car is a 3.8 liter 6-cup with 425 rwhp, the RSR on the pole has over 500 whp, and the 7-cup on the outside is a 4.0 litre with 452 rwhp. The TT I mentioned (silver wide body) passes all of them on the outside of the banking. Enjoy....

CFjan--my thoughts exactly.
Jr-- awesome video. Had to watch it three times. : ) Your point is a good one. As far as I know, there is no magic fairy dust that makes a Cup car fast. If you strip weight out of a GT2 and put in an excellent suspension....
I understand that most feel that a turbo is not as responsive as a normally aspirated car but at some point (200hp?) the hp advantage has to become overwhelming. Time will tell but at the end of the day I love a challenge and for better or worse, I will have a unique car that meets my needs of road and track.

Good luck with the project, sounds like a blast!!!
I'm not sure it's legal in the OLOA, but using methanol or ethanol (either injection or as a fuel) would have the boost spool quicker...it will do wonders for your throttle response. I've used methanol injection before on two cars, a supercharged Z06 and a Subaru STI.
The spool is, obviously, only applicable to the turbo cars, but the methanol injection allowed full boost a good 500-600rpms sooner than on pump due to the ability to tune in more timing. Lag was decreased substantially, to the point of it really being transparent. On the STI, I gained another 20hp and 60tq at the wheels. The other benefit, worth even more than the power or increased spool, was the complete lack of heatsoak with it's use. The Intake Air Temps (IATs) were exactly the same at the end of a 20 minute session as they were once the car was up to temp. Having all your power available all the time, with the car never dialing back the timing due to heatsoaking, is a good thing.
If meth injection is not legal, I'm aware that EVOms is converting cars to E85 with some very striking results.
Be good,
TomK

Thanks for the video. My favorite part was at the 10 minute mark where the two cars were side by side for almost 45 seconds, with no one giving an inch.

OP, I don't know the answer, but what was said above makes sense. Less weight + good brakes + good suspension + more power =
JR, was only going to watch a few minutes of that vid but ended up having to watch the whole thing, sitting on the edge of my chair. I probably shouldn't have done it before going to bed though, it'll take me a while to calm down.

The black turbo here doesent have any problems ;-)
Just goes to shop ya what you can do when ya throw some boost and a suspension at something....

cup car is all about balance, durability, linearity, and consistency. hard to achieve all this with the gt2.
and even harder the longer the duration of time the cars run for.

my gut guess is that you will end up installing all the cup car parts into that GT2. may be overall cheaper to get a cup car and an extra GT2 motor to play with.

Not a problem. 930man did it with his, then my GT2. Full monoball, RS uprights, Moton 3 way cockpit adj rear bar, OSGiken LSD, etc. Car still had its full interior, weighed 3200#'s and dyno'd 465 rwp on a DynoJet. Now driving it that fast ain't easy.
