So, after a day of testing I like the following settings:

r3-->like it over r2 even thought the file sizes are huge (2x) but the color and clarity are much better

closed back-->like it over the skeleton back as the wind noise is greatly reduced AND the sound of the car is still very audible.

waterproof seal--> like it removed as I don't drive underwater and it virtually eliminates the annoying geiger counter rattling sound.

THANK YOU EVERYBODY FOR THE INPUT!!!

So, some months later as you will note by the date, I bought Mike's GoPro unit. Haven't played with it at all, yet, as I can't figure out how to mount the thing. I've ordered a roll bar mount, so that will solve my long-term problem, but in the meantime, how do you mount using the big-*** suction cup? And what do the comments about closed back or open back mean? Are there mounting instructions posted anywhere?

There are a few different design backs. Some have slots for sound, some are solid, i.e.waterproof. Along with the camera come a number of different mounting pieces, to fit adhesive bases for flat and curved surfaces, tripod mount, and the suction cup. All of the mounting parts are available as an extra kit.

What a PITA! So, I checked the pack of goodies Mike sent along, and found the "open" back. Changed it out for the closed one. It was very tight snapping back into place, so tight that I broke the latch. Looks like I'll need to order a new latch.

Anyway, is there anything to show me how all these different pieces work, and how the suction cup mount works?

If I remember vaguely there's a lever on top of suction cup either I think u lift up so looks like suction cup is loose(kinda looks like dangling) then u push down on level it causes te suction cup to compress. It could be vice versa as well. There's so many freaking attachments its not even funny. Had the old one and used suction cup to mount in the rear window. I think the old one has the same latch buts it's in another house. If it's the same I can send to u. Mike

Mike, I'd really appreciate that as GoPro tells me I'll need to buy a complete housing for $40.

The missing mic jack is why I'm thinking about getting a Contour camera instead of the GoPro. Unfortunately the mic jack only comes with the "Contour Plus" at $499.

The suction cup thing does work ok. You can attach it to the inside of the windscreen. Only thing is the video is upside down. Most editing packages will let you flip it though.

Macster.

I'm just about to order as well. Just holding off a bit in case I get something like the Vbox data system, which comes with two cameras.

In generally use R2 for most of my vids but many of them are long (1hour) so in don't want toj run out of memory.
Go to YouTube and search for HCVChris to find all of my vids (all on gopro).

The camera came in today. I have opened it and have charged up the battery.

No time to use it yet. This weekend maybe but I have to find a big SD card!

Sincerely,

Macster.
