I hope this does't seem rude, but the sharkwerks fix drillS a hole in the castings and puts a bolt through and lock tights it in place, HOW ON EARTH WOULD THAT NOT WORK!!! People seem to be going over and over the same questions and are getting the same answers which all accumulate to the same thing Sharkwerks fix WORKS!!!

I think the point is that we now have 3.5 options to mitigate the cooling issue:

1) Run Water-Wetter
2) Sharkworks drill-n-bolt option (requries engine drop)
3) Weld the fittings (requires engine drop)
4) DIY drill-n-bolt (proven on 997 GT3 w/o engine drop, but guys trying now to do it on 996 GT3)

I am waiting for a result on #4.... If the "6" guys can do it w/o dropping the engine, I am in... I'd like to see if Sharkworks can work out a solution to the engine drop issue...

Thanks. This thread has been very informative, and helpful.

I have an 04 GT3 with 80,000KM (purchased new) and just blew out my 3rd fitting while on track at Calabogie MP. I "solved" the problem at the track by the last two times by cleaning the fitting thoroughly, and re-installing it using Red (High Temp) Loctite. This latest one is behind and below the alternator and is more difficult to deal with in the same fashion.

The fist instance happened while the car was still on warranty, and Posrche replaced the casting (I think). The second happened about 3 years ago, and that repair is still holding.

Does anyone know how many of these press-fit fittings are there, and are they all likely to fail?

There are 8 fittings on the 996 cars, they are all likely to fail eventually if not addressed.

I'll be buying these torquesolutions aluminum fittings. When the clutch needs to be done, I'll have the water pipes welded. I still can't believe that Porsche thought that an epoxy would be sufficient, especially with the heat these blocks are exposed to.

The fittings aren't necessary. And on the 996 cars two of the fittings are angled and the torqued solution kit has all straight pipes. My welder saw no benefit to using a different fitting, cleaned up the factory ones and welded them.

Dragging this back up since I'll be dropping my motor over the winter. Anyone who has had the pinned option done reported any failures post-repair?

Doing mine tomorrow, but it's impossible to fail since there's a bolt going right through to the inside of the coupling (into the coolant flow).

My first post
Had my 996 gt3 for two years now
Last weekend I had the infamous waterpipe failure
2003 GT3 CS with Gemballa mods from new
35k km
On Track at Albi, SW France
1st session of the day
Pipe behind alternator let go

see here

http://kenclare.smugmug.com/Cars/Por...3601&k=cd38QPR

Been told to use Loctite 648 and activator 7649 to repair it

I do not think I will be fully happy till I have the engine out and weld them all up though
