I just completed the replacement of my transmission carrier. 29,730 miles and my rubber is split exactly like gofishracing. No, you cannot visually inspect with parts on the car. I would estimate the job to take about 2 hours. You will need to raise the car (4 jack stands). You will need 10mm socket and T30 Torx wrench to remove the black plastic belly pans (remove the rear section first followed by the middle). You will need a 15mm socket (both long and short) and 16mm socket (for the bolts that go into the rubber mounts on the transmission carrier to the transmission). You will also need to hold/lift the transmission once nuts/bolts are removed. I placed my jack directly in front of the gear box drain plug, not much force is needed just enough to hold transmission/motor in place I do not think it will fall but it is needed to place nuts and bolts back into position. After covers are removed and jack in place, start removing bolts and nuts (pictures on the earlier link are good, do not need to remove those two large torx bolts next to the carrier towards the rear). The most difficult part of this project is removing and replacing the two 16mm bolts because of the large diameter rubber hose on both sides. My old carrier had a closed cell foam on the inside of each side that should be removed and reused on the new carrier. When reassembling I used old bolts and nuts. I would suggest the following assembly order starting out by first placing the nuts and bolts once all are in place then torque in the carrier to floor nuts first. Here is my suggested order of installing; Install two 16mm bolts that go through rubber carrier to transmission, do not tighten. Then install 4 nuts on the black bracket, then install 2 bolts on black bracket to carrier. Finally install 2 nuts from carrier to floor, these can be given the final torque. Then I would torque the nuts on the black bracket, side bolts on black bracket then the bolts on the rubber part of carrier. Double check everything is tight, torque values for nuts and bolts are 48 ftlb/65Nm. Install middle black belly pan, install rear black belly pan. Your done. Good luck, hope this helps and makes sense.

Steve

Well did not get a chance to try my 997 tranny mount idea. Customer was more comfortable with the Cupcar solution... So that is what is going in, along with Cupcar engine mounts and engine carrier (you have to have this for the engine mounts to mate up).

Bob, in your pic, the Cup transmission mount is not a direct swap on, right? What other parts are needed?

You need a LONG stud and a couple nuts. Thats it. Bolt in otherwise. The transmission bracket (the metal one that bolts to the chassis) is the same, so dont need that. And if you notice the bracket mounts directly to transmission. So you just remove the one that is on the transmission that bolts between the rubber mounts.

Assume the position!!!!! That little piece of metal is $1100 from Motorsports. Rennline should be able to make one and sell for $200.

John-san

Thank you for your response. But I would like to know tightening torque of the following bolt and nut.
Is it right?

I didn't see this discussed in this thread but are there replacement bushings for the carrier? Why doesn't a sponsor vendor here make a soft poly bushing or look at something from powerflex? I’m changing my trans mounts this weekend and will see how easy it is to press out the old bushing. It would be great if Windrush would make some in the same material as the wevo mounts.

I don't think you can simple replace the bushing. (good luck to you my friend. lol) Easiest thing is to get stock 997 upgraded part.

That's what I've got becuase it seems that's the best option right now. I'm new to Porsche but all the other cars I've worked on typically have replacable bushings. I'll see how hard it is to press out and report back.

Porsches are often not typical. I remember when I first got my 79' 930. I thought I would just go ahead and do a valve adjustment. I always did them on my other cars. That took years to learn correctly. lol Let me know. I think I have my old mount that I could send to you to rebuild as well. Might as well change the Trnsmission fluid as well ( another topic to twist you choices)

Thanks for the offer but i'll have my old mount to play with. I used the search funtion for fluid choices and you'd think I was talking Presidential politics. I've picked a brand and will keep it a secret.
