Yea, freak doesn't accurately describe the end result of me mounting the seat to the floor. I'm 6'4" and my wife is 5'3" and loves to drive the 3. Try to get a seat setup that works for both of us is a nightmare. Thanks for the details SLOW.

I'm 6'6", 230, and I fit comfortably, but the more I move the seat back for leg room, the more I have to stretch to reach the steering wheel. This can be solved with less recline, but then so goes the head room. It's not that I'm not comfortable. It's comfy, but it'd be nice if the steering wheel had tilt, and a bit more telescopic reach.

A steering wheel extension is the only way to reach properly the oem one, or if you go all out a cup steering wheel with a hub will do it too.

I'll trade you my 997 for your GT3. 997 has Tilt and telescope.

I solved my headroom issue by custom mounting a racing seat to the floor. Works great and for by wide derriere it is more comfortable than the stock seat. Only downside (if you were to call it that) is that nobody by myself or a similarly ginormous person can drive the car. Sucks to be them! :P

I don't have a cage. Never will.

Thanks for the quick response. My concern is obviously collision safety, most likely a rear-ender. With the metal plate removed, is there any risk the seat will not latch to the rails properly, thus allowing unsafe travel in the event of a collision? Even with a shortened plate, is it still possible that the seat doesn't have a hole to latch into?

My assumption would be, 'no'. But I would rather not disassemble the entire seat just to see how it clips into place. It looks as though the rails have holes from front to back, far more than the seat could ever latch into.

I don't suppose there's any qualified individual willing to 'certify' that this is the case? Sounds like a legal nightmare.

Last question: what kind of wrench/socket is needed to remove that bolt? Is there a name for it? It certainly didn't look like any standard hex wrench would work.

The side brackets that hold the seat are secured in the rails by 2-3 pins that protrude from the sliders mechanism depending on their position.
The metal plate acts as a stop, removing as I said is not a good idea. Making it shorter is ok.

For the bolts use a

E12 socket Torx

Tightening torque 48ftlb.

The metal plate has three holes, i recall (i'm not near my car), with the bolt being in the middle hole. Can I just move it 'one position' back, rather than shorten it?

I can't remember (and can't look as my old seats are in New York now) but note that I wanted to make the seat stop before touching the cage. In your case maybe you can gain a bit more than I did. So try it.

I have a weird body type - very short legs and very long torso. So headroom is an issue, but I need to sit close to the steering wheel to reach the pedals. Does the floor mount Brey-Krause with side mounted GT3 seats allow a forward position. I know it only has a 2" range (fore-aft). Is it pretty far back?

One other tall torso question: The GT3 seats have nice generously sized shoulder harness pass-throughs, but it looks like the Techquipment rollbar places the harness close to the bottom of the large pass-throughs, so that someone with a tall torso might receive a compression injury in a collision. Is that true or just an optical illusion in photos I've seen. I imagine a floor-mounted seat w/o sliders would improve this.

Thanks!

That's what I was afraid of. You should consider some alternatives - spinal compression is a nasty injury.

This is something I have to consider when getting the GT3... I have long legs (I'm 6'4").

I think lower mounts with Euro seats and cup steering wheel with hub.

I found some good info on the Schroth site - check the link at the bottom of this page (Quick Links: Competition Harness instruction). Starts on page 8 of the Adobe doc (says shoulder mount should result in belt being horizontal or no more than 20 degrees down - so bar can be slightly lower than shoulders):

Default Legroom Solution

I am new to the Rennlist.com forum however I am a fabricator of a legroom solution for taller drivers. I started www.extendmyseat.com 4 years ago after being cramped in my car.

We have recently completed the 996 and 997 911 seat extenders. Our simple drop in solution extends the legroom up to 3" with no drilling, welding or cutting. The brackets are made out of the a single price of 10 gauge steel and can be installed within 30 minutes.

I would be happy to answer any questions about the product.

I'm just under 6'2", with a '32 inseam. drove '72 then a 73 911t for 20 years in the 70s, 80s and 90s, in blissfull comfort, legroom and arm room (and headroom) to spare. recently tried out an '86 3.2 Carrera and literally couldn't fit it into it. My knees were on the dash board. no way i could have bought the car. What did they do with the legroom? Just bought an '85 928S which has plenty of legroom. I'm looking at a 997 -- wondering if it has legroom -- or did it carry over the cramped architecture from the GSeries and beyond? Of course a simple test drive will tell me. I WANT a 997 (or a 996), so I'm prepared to modify the seat track along with the very helpful suggestions.
