Default porsche tequipment roll bar installation

Folks,

I recently picked up a '04 GT3.

I'll be picking up euro seats and a tequipment roll bar this weekend. From what I've read in the forum the bar is less than fun to install.

1. Is there cutting involved in the installation? (It looks like there is some trimming of parts to get it installed properly)

2. Where should I look to have someone to install it for me?

Trey

Read the archives for examples of plenty of "fun" people have had. Some folks say you don't need to remove interior bits and trim inner rocker pieces and folks who do that often end up damaging something.

Find a local shop that has done this before. Or buy a DAS bar instead. Much easier installation and a sturdier bar too.

Good luck!

If you have the money to let it be done by your local shop. Please DO

If you want to spend a full day:

You HAVE to look at this video before you start. It is an absolute must.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yI2eZjKpYd4

1: You need a pair of extra hands every now and then.

2: Please take off the rear view mirror before you try to put the bar in place.
I did not, and tipped the bar against the rear view mirror with a super soft touch and the window broke immediately. (see 17:14 sec in video)

3: The rear bolds can only be screwed in after you take out 2 plastic caps that cover the holes where you normally mount the rear safety belts. You can't see these since they are behind the carpet. These can only be taken out after you remove the "back seat" carpet. ( a normal 996 or turbo would not have this since it has already installed the rear seat belts)

4: Make sure you cut away enough material in the sills. I had to do it twice due to cutting not enough material.

5: My rolbar was so incredibly stiff, that even after cutting all the material, it did not fit. Positioning the bar and getting the screws in (without damaging the body thread) requires some patience. I used 2 strap bands (is that english ?) to allow me to position them correctly. The final fitting was the most work.

Don't hesitate to ask me if you have any further questions.

Is the DAS a much better solution?

I would have thought the actual Porsche part would be a smoother option.

I was going to start a new thread on a related topic but it might fit in here nicely. I want to know what people think about regarding a DAS 4 pt bolt-in roll bar vs a Safety Devices 6pt bolt-in roll bar. Is this really an ungrade, going from 4 pts to 6pts when we are talking about a generic bolt in cage with many bends by the A-pillar? I know there is a GT3 RS cage but that is about $4000.

The basic question is should I upgrade from the DAS rollbar if I'm not going with a custom WELDED cage?

I am not sure about the DAS but if i look at on their site it will require to be bold on to the chassis i guess and i think (not sure) you need to drill holes in the chassis for it. Meaning you have to undo the carpet or cut out big parts. Personally i think the Tequipment one looks the best after the hard work. Looks very original. If you do it correctly, the carpet stays very nice.

^das bar- front is bolted to safety belt anchor(tech bar I think is the same anchor point for front) and the rear is tied to the rear struts. No drillling necesary but if u plan to keep carpet u need to cut slits for the rear strut area. Mike

Yes, carpet needs to be cut or you can do what I did and I made my own carpet piece. Or buy a spare piece to cut up (so you can return to stock) or leave it out altogether.

Pic with carpet piece removed:

Shameless plug- I'm selling my das bar but it's powdercoated red(non sunroof for 6 gt3) I'm asking $550 plus shipping or local pickup. Bar still in car- been kinda lazy taking it off. Mike
