Default 997 GT3 Shifters and Cup Car Cables

I recently lost my shifter entering T1 at WGI. I have 997 GT3 shifter and cup car cables. Part that failed was a $.05 plastic retaining piece (looks almost like a push in grommet). After I got towed in, Dan Jacobs pulled the console apart, replaced this POS with a metal bolt, and away I went.

Could you please elaborate on where that part came from the shifter assembly? I installed a 997 shifter a couple of months ago and I do not recall seeing anything that resembles that part... It looks more like an expansion clip to hold carpets or a molding. Did it get dislodged from somewhere and jammed the shifter? I might have to go in again and check... Thanks! Lou
