Default GT2: Differences between 996.1 and 996.2

Are there any differences between the 2 versions of 996 GT2's ?

I know the 996.2 has a bit more power

I've read the 996.1 feels a bit unstable at high speeds, whereas the 996.2 feels better

If the purchase is a 996.1, what improvements should be done to the car ?

Is it really a handful to drive ? Scared by the nickname "widow maker"...

The mark 2's had better factory geo settings but this can be adjusted no problem anyway,no difference in suspension.
Mark 2 has 483bhp and mark 1 has 462bhp,mark 2 has nicer mark 2 gt3 style wheels but 12" rears.
Also carbon, mirror gloves, front bumper intake and rear deck top spoiler blade, thats about it i think, also a lot rarer, here in uk anyway
cheers

Neil is correct that:
The bump in hp came just from a remap. And they added some carbon items and changed some aero details.
And also Mk2s are really rare
In a WW total production of around 1000+ cars only 1 third is mk2s.
In UK about 120 cars landed and only 15 or something mk2's.
In the US about 300 cars arrived and only 10% were mk2

But:

mk2 had indeed gt3 style 12" wheels but mk1 had 12" as well

And suspesnion had indeed different springs rear (*same shocks) and different shocks and springs front which replaced the mk1 version items..
So now if you have a mk1 and go to the dealer to change them you get the newer version old versions are gone.
Also had different alignment specs.

Never knew about the different springs and front shocks,do you know what this difference is?You learn something new everyday.
I knew about the mark 1 rear wheels being 12's was just pointing out the mark 2's are like gt3 but 12",

Yes didn't know it either until a while back when I did some research for a friend that wanted to buy one in UK.

Well in a few words they tried to correct the understeer problems of the mk1 as you probably know everybody was complaining about.
To do this they changed alignment specs and also used
New bilstein shocks for front unique to the GT2mk2 and new springs, new springs for the rear again unique to the gt2mk2.

Interestingly enough they didn’t change anti roll bars in an effort to solve the problem as they did in the 997gt3.1 , probably back then changing springs and shocks was a phone call away from Bilstein or H&R now with PASM it got expensive so the play with bars.

Btw the only thing I haven’t confirmed is if some late mk1 had the newer suspension components, I wouldn’t be surprised if they did. Some early 03s that is.

Also its interesting to point out that the newer version replaced the old ones in the PET that is admitting a mistake because for example in the mk1 GT3 you can still buy the correct springs and shocks of the model despite the mk2 was an improvement model.

Sorry I don't have the exact specs of the springs of the GT2s.

I thought the front springs were same to the 996mk2GT3 which has 40N/mm springs part number 996 343 531 95 but I was wrong the newer version of gt2mk2 has 996 343 531 98 number old ended with 93
