997 GT3 Shifter - doesn't feel right

I installed the 997 shifter [entire SCU] last night. With the alignment tool in place, the non-forward gear selector [the one on the left side] would not "fall" into place. I had to move the shifter ever so slightly to the left to get it to fit. Turns out this wasn't at the marks that I made on the cable with the sharpie indicating where the cables were when I took the original SCU off.
When I test drove it, it was a little notchy going into 3 and 4, almost like it wasn't centered right. It worked "fine," but it didn't feel like the big improvement in precision other posts made it out to be. It felt just as good as before, but perhaps a little shorter.
I went back and moved the left hand cable to the spots I marked when I took it apart (where they originally were). Now, 3/4 seems better, but 5/6 seem a bit notchy. In fact, 5 feels like it needs a little more effort than 1/2 or 3/4.
Anyway, my Q: for those that did this, did you simply "drop" the left hand cable into place when the SCU was in the locked neutral position, or did you adjust the cable so it was at the same position as when you disassembled it? [FWIW, the forward gear selector cable (right side) dropped almost perfectly into the linkage adapter at the same marked position where it originally was in the old SCU]
Thanks,

Before 6 cup shifter I had 997 gt3 shifter that was considerably shorter and installation was easy and I just dropped it in.
Btw 996 Cup shifter is 10 better than any other 996 997 shifter.
Before the 997 you didnt have notchy changes?
Here is the manual when you removing or installing shifter assembly must be bolted in place no need to move it at all.

I just ordered one myself. Should be here next week... There was an old thread I found mentioning that the new shifter has a different geometry than 996 one.
See post form damianc4s here: https://rennlist.com/forums/996-gt2-...shifter-4.html
Looks like the thing to do is disregard old markings and install using tool to center shifter/cables while trans is in neutral. That is what I plan to do...
Hope this helps. Lou
