Clunk when releasing brake MK1

Clunk when releasing brake MK1
Hello experts,
Car is 996 GT3 MK1 , New pagid pads installed by mechanic.
When I brake lightly like in stop & go traffic, a light clunk from the front is heard when releasing the brake pedal. Sometimes also when applying it light, but more often when releasing.
When I brake hard it does not seem to appear. Also if I have braked hard , it seems like it takes a few light brake "taps" before the sound comes back.
Ideas anyone?

And the clunk disease continues to spread.
Did you install race pads or road pads. Maybe if you didn't install anti squeal shims the pads make the noise.
If its not brake related after all check sway bar bolts and drop links .

Sorry for the non-technical reply but I recently had the rotors and pads replaced in my Mk1 and same thing until he fitted the "pins" that hold they pads. This stopped the rattle. May be the same thing.

The mech suspected that as well l, but I wanted a second opinion from real experts :-)
I went from original with dampers to pagid without so it feels like strong circumstantial evidence .. Don't really care about the rattle though, just don't want to loose the brakes.

It is your pads moving arond in the caliper.... and the noise is from them hitting the guide pin. As a pagid dealer... my experience is the pads/pins can not really be fitted. The pads have a "D" shaped hole that is slighly larger then the pin. You really do not want to go adding bushings onto the pin to take up the gap. This will ultimatly result in the pads binding.
The other is (depending on the compound and if you still have the anit-vibration shims, the pads also have a tendency to heat melt into the vibration pads, which locks them into place) that the pads will need heat too stay seated into the caliper. Once you start driving it around town with light braking your pads "Unbed". When they are not at operating temps... they are like 80 grit sand paper... sanding off all the material that was deposited on the rotor.
Hope this helps.

Best of luck... I had a clunk on my car when I first picked it up from Dave Maynard... It would only make the sound when turning & Loading the driverside supsension.... Turn out my Strut tower was damaged... Fixed it by replacing with the X74 kit.
Good Luck

The noise is a result of using a dual action caliper where the pads have to float. The pad metal backing will make contact with the caliper and a clunk will often be heard. It's perfectly normal and the sound can change or go waway completely depending on the type of pads and the resulting clearance between caliper and pad backing plate. I've actually ground material off the pad metal backing to give more clearance and eliminate dragging pads and a more positive retraction. Many OE pads are designed for a tighter fit or have clips, springs or other devices to eliminate the clunk for street use. This clunk or knock is very common on race cars and is generally the norm.

I had the same banging when braking. Pulled the wheel off to find one of the bolts holding the caliper on had fallen out...the top bolt. Does anyone know what size and type of bolt fits the 1985 928s?
