Default CEL codes

Anyone know for sure what these two codes mean for the 2004 GT3?

P0430 fault code 45 catalytic converter efficiency bank 2
P0420 fault code 40 catalytic converter efficiency bank 1

Read off the Durametrices code reader after the CEL light came on during easy highway driving.

If it comes back after reset I would change first the 02 sensors if it comes back then the cats are dead.

John

ps
if cel light is steady on you can drive the car.
if it starts to blink better don't

Converters worn out. Unless the P0420/P0430 error codes accompanied by aging O2 sensor codes the converters are worn out assuming the rest of the exhaust system stock and in good repair/condition.

Macster.

Thanks guys. Interesting that I never get the codes on track. Only street driving and they have come on once before maybe 4 months ago.
Very inconsistent and not when I am pushing the car.

Track driving has you giving the engine enough throttle the Ecu goes open loop and suspends its monitoring of the converters (among other things).

It takes a nice 30 mile drive -- just about from home to office or back again -- in my 02 Boxster to trigger the P0430 code. The drive is of course on city streets/highway/freeway so the engine controller sees a mix of driving conditions which IIRC 4 speed/load ranges must be obtained and maintained for 300 seconds each. Track driving almost guarantees this won't occur.

Sincerely,

Macster.

FYI it doesn’t actually suspend the monitoring, the threshold of 02 sensors measuring voltage from 0 to 1 changes and because the values when mostly on full throttle are always useless for monitoring the effectiveness of the cats the ecu ignores the findings of values v>1, when driving normally the dme is triggered and you get the cel.
Ergo it can happen on the track as well if you leave the car running after or slow down. Just that is rarer.

Allan doesn’t have that problem because he always drives flat out.

...and this winter I'll be removing my passenger seat to install all my HD cameras so you can see me drive flat out.

Plan to keep passenger seat off? This is how it looks like : ). Once I get my lazyass off and get my car race prepped with full rollcage and safety stuff- hopefully be ready by next season. Mike

I like very much. Must be the red color..

Its funny how we can turn ANY thread into a "lightweight track your gt3" thread.

...appears to be the natural progression for many of these cars. I keep thinking the same thing.

Mike: Is that a DAS bar you have? I have one and the local rules say it isn't good enough for solosprint and hillclimbs in my area. I need to modify it - maybe too much - so I keep coming back to what you and Mooty are doing. It's definitely a one-way trip and until now I've been keeping all the old parts to go back to stock.

Not sure what I'll be doing.

Yeah once u go this route it's pretty much like u said a one way trip. I saved all my stock stuff but I cringe putting it all back on. Let's just say if u take the plunge the 6 is transformed to a monster. Having driven mooty's stripper it literally explodes off the line and go thru corners with aplomb(I don't feel ne lateral g's vs our pigs). I have to say it's a nite/day difference when it's stripped. Mike ps- das bar is good for what it is de's- ne more u need full cage. Mike

I have received those codes on/off via the same durameterics software. Just like others have said not on the track, but during street driving. Sometimes I would get the CAT code and other times I would get the O2 Sensor. I replaced the O2 Sensor and the CAT code came back. At least the CAT's are replaced under warranty - they are expensive otherwise. The O2 Sensor was out of my pocket. Now, no more those codes..

Rodneyr, How long are the cats under warranty? I heard the emmission coverage is longer but thought it had to had been expired for an '04 by now.
Been meaning to check my warranty manual....
