Default My first Rennlist post!

Hello. I have been lurking on this forum for a while, and decided to make my first post. I am not an owner of a P-car yet but will be in the next 1 to 2 years. Right, now I drive VW Corrado VR6. I have my sights set on a 996 GT3. The only downside I hear about these cars is the rough ride. I don't think I really care about this. My current VW and my previous 1991 GTI had stiff suspension and it didnt bother me. Now to the point of my post. It seems that these cars are reasonably reliable in terms of time spent in the shop. I have gotten grief from the wife about the Corrado, so if I plan to spend $50k, I need it to not be in the shop all the time, especially while I am still making payments. Right now, my plan is to save a $20k downpayment and then finance $30k. Does this sound like a good plan or should I wait until I have more to put down? Thanks for advance for advice.

If u plan to track a fair amount in the 6- it can get real expensive in terms of consumables and that's not including safety stuff ie seats for 5-6 point harness/ rollcage/helmet and Hans(should get a Hans device if u go with harness- your life is more important). Mike

6 GT3's can be had in the high forties now. By the time you're ready you'll have a good chunk to put down on it.

Don't worry about the ride, it's stiff, but it feels like a sports car. I drove an R8 and it felt like a luxury car by comparison. Stiff, loud, immediate = fun.

Welcome to the Dark Side.

Use the search tool and do some research.

Beware of lower priced GT3 needing some repairs, it is usually a costly project to get the car back to normal.

unless seller is distressed, most high 40's GT3 has stories or high miles.

Welcome to Rennlist jamren. One observation is that the GT3 will be triple the cost in every aspect in comparison to the VW’s. So, it would be a good idea to include a cushion in your monthly budget for significant maintenance costs just in case, not to mention that your insurance will at least double and possibly triple if you have points on your record. Having owned several VW’s in the past, my guess would be that the GT3 would be more reliable but I’m not sure as I haven’t owned mine for very long and it’s not a daily driver.

If you have to finance it you can't afford it

when that $50k feels like a reasonable amount to pay for a car in cash, then its okay.

otherwise, save your cash and focus on the big picture, not toys.

Thanks Backmarker. Perhaps, I should look into getting a cheaper Porsche...maybe a 930.
