Default 996 GT2

Guys,

'03 2 with 4K miles. Owner had Porsche short shift kit installed. Service history indicates several visits to adjust linkage, stiffness, etc. and PPI indicates she shifts different, pecular. Is this a car to avoid? I am thinking transaxle issues may be inevitable.

Thanks.

Too bad can't try car with stock Porsche shifter installed. At least one source (UK car mag) advises against putting short shift kits in these cars.

4K miles wicked low miles. Maybe too low, though I think these engines lots more trouble prone than the standard 996 engines.

Hopefully engine has some oil/filter services and brake fluid services and coolant drain/refill with fresh antifreeze service under its belt.

Tires almost certainly will need replacing due to age unless car has had tires recently. Alignment called for just to be sure it is good so new tires last as long as possible.

Sincerely,

Macster.

The M964 engine is derived from the GT1 is in the 996 GT2 and is far more reliable than the M96 engine of the regular 996.

Item to check carefully is the shifting. If the PO has abused the gear box the synchros will need to be replaced. That is a weak spot on all the GT2 and GT3 cars.

Don't see why it would be a "weak spot", as the GT2's have brass synchros for the added strength, I believe GT3 does as well..

They actually have Steel synchros as well as a tranny cooler. Gearbox shifts harder than a normal 6TT as well as has a heavier clutch. Kind of strange to put in a short shift as Porsche already put an OE shortshift in all GT2's.

The only thing that goes wrong w/the GT2 motors is the result of untalented people who drive outside their skill level and crash them...usually a$$ first.....

The GT2 engine is so reliable. I have 36,000+ miles on my car with no worries.
