Ok, this might sound like a stupid question, but I'm hunting down a 2002-2005 GT2 in arctic silver and I would like to know how to tell the difference between a Real GT2 and a Porsche 911 Turbo with GT2 badges and mods on it. And trust me, I've come across them. the owner will usually tell me it's a 996 turbo with serious body and performance mods, but they claim GT2 in the ad or listing.
I'm fully aware of the different front bumper, rear wing, badges, etc., but are there any Serial numbers or VIN number differences to identify a real GT2? or some other visual way to verify it's a real GT2?
I've seen 911 turbo's with every mod right down to the carbon fiber/ceramic rotors and gt2 sill plates, so I want to make sure I am buying a Real GT2 when I am paying that type of money.
My current Porsche is a 2000 Porsche 911 C2.
I appreciate any insight you may be able to offer me.
And yes, my 996 does have a fake GT2 wing on it, but that's why I am now buying the real thing.
Thanks,
Nick

Not being an expert, but would not the 911 TT have the smaller trunk up front that accomodates the all wheel drive and true GT2 have a bigger trunk (which would be similar to my Caymen S cabriolet)?

Best way to confirm is when you have your local dealer (or the dealer local to the car you are inquiring about) do a pre-purchase inspection have them run the VIN number and they can confirm for you it is a real GT2 and what the options are. There should be a white tag under the front hood with the options codes, the paint codes etc...
You can also tell by driving as it will not feel the same as a Turbo, steering is very light and quick. However a Turbo could have been converted to 2wd, hence a trip to the dealer, or at least a phone call.
And of course when you look inside you will see no back seats. If you pull up the carpet behind the front seats you will find no sound deadening either, just painted steel. Good luck finding a car, it is a great time to buy one.

I believe this car would be a good one to start with! All the mods done - low miles - sick fast - your color - just get the price you want and you are all set.

or this one (one of 24 2004's - this is a very fair deal): This one is also on Auto trader.

IIRC there's no PSM in a real thing. Also front wheel carriers are different, unless they're not changed too. Transmission does not have connection to cardan shaft in the front.
Transmission code for a GT2 is G96.88, for a turbo G96.50.

Just look at the rear spoiler lid with the sticker that denotes it's a gt2 and it should match the vin number to the vin number by driver window side. Only way to make sure is the vin number confirmed by the dealer. Mike

I don't think one GT2 was optioned that way lol...
Sunroof is a tell tale sign, only a handful of non sunroof cars were produced, I happened to have one of them by chance in seal grey like my gt2..
Something very simple to look for is a rear wiper button or PSM button!

From the exterior only: You can sometimes also spot a non-GT-2 by looking down the top venting slots on the front bumper. A lot of tt conversions just slap a GT-2 bumper on the front end and the radiator plumbing is not changed. The GT-2 has a different front radiator and venting mounting arrangement and the air flow from the lower part of the bumper up thru and over the front bumper is very clean and unobstructed. The radiator is clearly seen looking down the venting on the front bumper for many fake GT-2s. Most tuners don't do the re-mounting of the radiator as there are number of parts that are involved.
But as others have stated - the PSM button and no sunroof are dead giveaways if you are inside the vehicle.
