buy a used 2003 diesel dodge 2500 regular cab. Let it be your "utlitiy" truck for the next 20 years.

i use a dodge power wagon, but it is a gas engine, and i prefer the cummins diesel for mileage.

my new tow rig is now a cummins diesel dodge.

If i were buying a sport ute to tow, i would go with the the Range Rover cause im a sucker for retro....

In theory great, but practicality not so much. Most people don't have the funds or space to have a "utility" truck just laying around

Leave it at my house!

I use my small truck as my daily driver (Tacoma). Gonna sell it though for a 3/4 ton Sierra or Silverado to handle my towing duties.

Wife's daily driver (when she isn't driving the 993 Targa).
Her 2nd Excursion diesel....God, how I love that truck.

It could tow a Cayenne And a trailer And a race car....

Unfortunately I don't have room for a utility vehicle to sit around.

Well, I did a little more digging in visiting my BMW and Porsche shops in town and here is what I found. I can spec out an '10 BMW X5 xDrive35 (diesel) (265hp/426 lbs torque, 26mpg) for around $50K with the various incentives. The car would be ready in the Sept timeframe. The other option is a base Cayenne '09 (290hp/273 lbs torque, 19mpg) with similar options for around $53K. I believe Porsche has the better financing with 1.9% which is very nice. The Cayenne S is another +12K so that car is out of my price range.

So, you can guess where I am leaning towards if I pull the trigger. It was nice not having a car payment..

+1 Lewis

My VDUB can tow a Cayenne, and a trailer, and a race car, and your Excursion.

A diesel vehicle is a better choice if you can justify it; however, I use a CTT with an open trailer and it works great. The only drawback is in the fact that you have to fuel up every 250-300 miles.

If you are choosing between X5 3.0 diesel and a gasoline V6 Cayenne the X5 is a much better choice.

The diesel will pull your rig much better.

Always go diesel if you have the choice.
Apart from wheelbase, there is no substitute for torque.

BTW, on the X5d, do they offer heavy duty cooling/electrical/tow package?

I don't think BMW offers any type of heavy duty cooling/eletrical/tow package. My guess is this will have to be aftermarket. I will ask to confirm, but I am expecting they will say no.

Amen on the big truck. I bought a F-350 crew cab dually diesel a number of years ago and love it. If you are going to do any towing, just take the plunge and get the right vehicle from the start

No... I asked when I got mine...

So far it pulls the boat nicely (Regal 22') and great mpg...
