Default OEM stereo amplifier location

I bought an '05 GT3 for tracking. Previous owner swapped out stereo for aftermarket rig with big subwoofers in back, 2 heavy amps in front. These are all out now, but I'd like to put in a OEM-type amp to listen to the radio, at least a little. Can someone tell me where the factor unit is located?

TIA

I cannot believe that you pulled all that out. what are you going to use to drown out the muffler bypass pipes?

(note: ken dropped by the other week for a sampling...)

I dont think it has a amp unit at all power is from the unit itself. Had an amp unit in the front trunk area with my old 996 but none on the gt3 unless they relocated it. If there is no amp unit explains why oem stereo is actually oem monosound-POS. By the way I concur muffler bypass just blows rotten eggs : ). Mike

My radio is self contained, so no external amp.

I thought I was being sacrilegious replacing the OEM radio with a Kenwood so I could get my iPhone interfaced (I can't hear it ringing). Stock speakers will probably be fine for me. Interior noise is loud enough with the radio off. It makes no sense trying to overcome road noise with 2,000 Watts just so you can loose your hearing.

Ditto to Marv- I put in a Kenwood HU to replace the self contained CDR23 OEM HU. This is to listen to my ipod when I'm street driving.

Thanks, guys.

fve, why didn't I just think to call you ? BTW, did those mufflers ever come?
still waiting to get mine back from the shop.

The PO had a new head unit put in, Eclipse AVN 5510. I want to keep that because of the included NAV and Bluetooth, just don't want to haul around a lot of extra weight for "Premium sound package".

What did you install?

I went with the DDX814. Should have it in this Tuesday and exactly for the same reason, street driving, since this is also doubling as my my daily driver.

on a more serious note, here as some diagrams for cd23 connections in the back, in case that helps with what connects where.

Oh...the mufflers need some massaging to try out. That along with the transmission oil is the project for another rainy day (uh...that would be tomorrow).

Kenwood KDC-X792. It's great for ipod. It displays song and artist. Also has a CD player.

I installed a pcm with nav from a 2005 turbo S in my 2004 GT3. 996 GT3's do not come with an external amp, but if you want to install one the factory location for 996's is on the trunk floor. You will also need to wire it because 996 GT3's are not prewired for it and you will need the optical cable which goes between the head unit and the factory amp.

Yes, replaced the original single cone speakers with MB Quart units front and rear. I did a little remodeling of the OEM covers to allow for the fitting of both the tweeter and mid. Amazing what you can achieve with Dynamat Extreme and 2-part epoxy resin.

The large front MB Quart crossovers are located under the headunit.
