Thanks Holger for the red carpet entrance. I was at the track and went from 5 to 2(have shorter r/p so 5 was used) at braking zone of T1 at Thill(mooty was behind me) and car literally went full 90 degrees to the left into grassy knoll going sideways afterward. I had an rsr pressure plate/ clutch but it just popped when it overeved. Don't know what a stock pressure plate will do but imagine it would do the same. I still was able to get off track but but by the time in paddock no clutch pedal engagement. Had it towed. I was pissed 2 nd session of 1st track day with new 80/80 lsd(1st session was awesome) and never ever misshifted from 5 to 4- i was janxed that day). If u downshifted from 4th u must have meant rather then 3rd it went into 1st rt? I would get a second opinion. Trannys on the gt3 are pretty stout. U aactually saw the cracks on casing? If need replacing/rebuilding I would go the full monty in lwfw/pressure plate/ring pinion and lsd while your there. Regards. mike

There is a recent thread here somewhere about a totaled GT3 and that fellow may be selling parts, including a tranny.

Update today shop said they will
take out the diffrental and weld the fine crack under the hole in the bell housing. If this dosen't work a replacement Cup casing for $1,500 will be my next option.

Thanks for all of your help !

I am trying to up load photos.

Why mess with trying to patch up a damaged part when 1500 will mean you know its right? The labour to drop the box must be at least that, never mind splitting it and rebuilding????!

DanH,
Your, correct I had the same question, but the hair line crack is about 1 inch long and to find a CUP casing it needs to come in from Germany. The shop would test the repair with some kind of DYE. I spoke to Brian Copans he said it
should work but did recomend the new casing. I quess I am taking a chance and if it dosen't work then out it comes. They will weld from the inside and out.

Thanks,

Sounds like the best alternative so far.

Think about resale too. I wouldn't buy your car knowing you'd done this reading this thread

DanH,
Your right it may hurt resale. But they called today and it's finished came out perfectly. I don't think I would sell for 5-6 years and if it became a problem the next time I have the clutch replaced would change the casing.

Thanks for you insight

As others have said do some research on used 996 GT3 gear boxes. I think Los Angeles Dismantlers had one. If it is gone, they may connect you with someone that does.

If you haven't got one already, invest in a mirror on a stick (tool) and flash light. Inspect each time you get it hot and it cools off all the way. Just keep an eye on it.
