OT: Next generation GT3 rumor
I do not want to quote my source because this is totally unconfirmed, but interesting enough to be on the lookout for. I hope it is not true, because it would be too bad: there is a possibility that the next generation GT3 will have a wet sump engine, basically an uprated version of the "normal" 911 engines. The number I heard was that Porsche would save in excess of $10K per engine if they go in this direction.
To me these cars are made to a higher standard and as such are the last link to 911s of old: built to take a lot of punishment as long as you take care of the car. Maybe a wet sump engine can handle the track time, but I feel a lot better with the dry sump.
Anyway, it would be another very good reason to hang onto your 996 or 997
GT3s....definitely will make them collectible a few years down the road IMO!!

in TT forum, a long time RL (sorry, my memory is failing) posted that next turbo MAY be wet sumped. now GT3...
it will be interesting to see. maybe PAG perfected wet sump.
997 seems to do well on track.

(If that is true) They probably decide to feature the dry sump engine only in the RS. Porsche is having some problems to justify the price difference between the GT3 and the RS, specially in the USA. When the first RS appear back in 2003, they had to stole some goodies of the regular Mk2 in favor of the RS, for the same reason. A good example of that kind of politic is the single mass flywheel that could be found in the Mk1 (like mine) and not on the MK2.

I remember this "rumor" about 1-2 years ago before the 997GT3's.
Then someone from oversea posted pictures (from cellphone) "Origin: Motorsport"

I dont buy it. the GT3 is a homoligation car for the LeMans Series. The motor used is close to the Cup motor, if not exactly the same. I could see the TT or the GT2 however there is no reason to change the
GT3 motor(other than improving it). PAG is having enough trouble keeping up with Ferrari without going backward in the motor department. I have heard 2 people inside Porsche saying the MkII motor is going to be either the 3.6 or the 3.8 drysump with Direct injection yada yada. But no wet sump. This is the 997 rumor, if your rumor is about the 998 then I have no information.

Cup car is based on the GT3 chassis... Not the RS.... I would think that would make the GT3 the homologation car.

Guys I think it might just happen, there are strong rumors (albeit rumors) that the next TT gets the wet sump aka integrated dry sump- whatever motor. I wouldn't be surprised if the Gt3 gets it too. So hold on to your dry sump cars, that's what I'm gonna do.

it doesnt make sense to have the GT3 be a wet sump, Porsche doesnt race wet sumps.
The TT and GT2 dont race so they could do it there but not the GT3-HOWEVER everyone knows
that the TT, GT2 and the GT3 all are siblings of the fabulous 98 GT1 LeMans car I think it would be a huge mistake. ALSO think about the buyers that buy these cars. If they know the TT, GT2, and maybe the GT3
motors are compromise motors, I think they will move on. I would think of looking at Ferrari. ALSO I am not happy with the hurdles Porsche put in front of us loyalists to get 997 GT3s and RS's. If they continue to cheapen my experience, then I think me and other loyalist will find somewhere else to invest my 150-200K in my dreamcar world. I just dont think Porsche would throw us away. But then again after
this last experience maybe I overestimate the investment Porsche has in us and the slobering they have in the dollar.

I remember this wet-sump rumor for the 997. It's not gonna happen. A GT3 with a Carrera engine would not be a GT3, it would be a Carrera with hard suspension.

I agree, but they'd add a Limited Slip Diff and a deeper oil pan (for better oiling under g-loads) and call it a trackcar. Can't buy another Carrera in the US with LSD, so they'd hook a fair number of folks, I think.
