Tear-Offs for the windshield?
Alright so I am getting to the point where I can't see clearly out my windshiled from the millions of nicks in the windshield and the final straw came this past weekend when I got a rock squarely on the windshield that actually cracked it.
So, when I replace the windshield, would tear-offs be the answer? I see them on alot of cars at the track (basically the cups) and not sure what their job really is. Is it purely a "keep it clean" look so instead of wiping the window clean you just tear off one layer.........or is there protection as well?
Thanks!

Yes for a car driven at the track most of the time. They are applied just like window tint and do an amazing job. A team I drive for in Koni Challenge uses them on their BMWs and it is a huge difference. They haven't had to replace a windshield this season thanks to the tear offs. Visibility out the windshield is the same as it was before.

Matt, I remember talking to you about these one day in the paddock but I never asked how they are secured. Something that needs to be done to the car first to accept them?

Dell-
A little late to the converstaion but a friend of mine (ex pro racer) tracks his Cayman S which is also a street car.
He had 2 layers applied when he bought the car and after a year removed his first layer. I don't believe there is any special prep involved except thet the glass needs to be virtually new (So I can't put it on my S2...)
He'll be at VIR this weekend (White Cayman S) if you want to stop by and take a look at it.
I'm not sure if he had it done in VA or FL as he lives there half the year.

In the meantime, I am going to use "Helicopter Tape" from ISC Racer's Tape
in the 4 inch width for the next track event. It is good and heavy and should work fine for the weekend.

Y'all will never believe this. Just got a rock into the windshield on my Escalade. At first it sounded like a gun shot and scared the crap out of me. Saw the damage and it was a pretty descent size chunk taken out of the glass (maybe about the size of a dime). No biggie right? I'll get it "repaired". I didn't even get 1 mile down the road and it EXPLODED! A hairline crack shot out of one side (at 3 oclock) and the other size (at 9 oclock).
So now I have 2 frickin windshields to replace! Can't wait to see the bill for this.
I called my insurance and said that this falls under comprehensive or collision (I can choose) but since my deductible is $500 for both I have to pay $1000 out of pocket total for both. ARGH!!!!
Time to start calling around to see what it will cost just private pay.
I'm going to start taking the bus.

so, these tear off are DIFFERENT than the clear bra (3m, venture or otherwise) we use on the paint?
is this something i can apply or do i need to hire some clear bra installer type to install?

Dell, robin is right (again, as usual)
my glass deductible on all my non porsches are $100. the porsche is insured totally differently as i am trying to clean up my records, so that's a different topic. but do ask your agent for a different rider to see if you can get glass replaced cheaper in the future.
