Default How well does alcantara wear over time?

Going through the final 'tick' sheet for my 08 GT3 order. From some of you that have been driving your GT3s 4-5 years now, how has the alcantara held up on the steering wheel and shifter? I am worried about wearing and/or fading. There is a no-cost option for a thicker standard leather steering wheel...might go that route depending on feedback.

thanks!

it depends. do you have sweaty hands?
my alcantara shifter is like new after 8000+ miles.
but a friends shifter is matted and his car has 3800 miles. he tends to sweat on his palm, i dont. that may be the difference. his alcantara seats wore well, but again that's only 3800 miles. i dont have alcantara seats, can't comment.

I do like the thicker steering wheel option. Mike

Interestingly, the leather thicker steering wheel optioon no longer appears on the Porsche GT3 configurator! I opted for that (12/06 build), and have been totally happy with it. It's handsome, IMHO, and should be durable. No doubt Alcantera is grippier, but this isn't much of a consideration if one wears driving gloves for track events.

I, too, had concerns re Alcantara durability w/sweaty palms.

thanks everyone...haha -- i cant get away from my 997 GT3 friends

Karl, do you find that it looks awkward to have the gear shifter in Alcantara and the SW in leather? i.e. mismatched?

i am hoping to hear from some 996 GT3 owners that have alcantara in their cars with 10k + miles on them...how did it wear?

(ps. my palms only get sweaty when the V1 alarms)

My car has 16k on it and the alcantara is as new. My hands aren't completely dry when pressing on either...
