You know we havent talked much about the gear ratios but the 997s are much more usable I noticed.
that was the one upgrade on my 996 I was going to do when I did the LWFW but didnt. The 7 gears ratios are shorter and more usable. Along with the Wider track bigger brakes. I think thats why the 7 seems more planted is the wider track.

I can't afford the extra $50k for a 997 GT3. I tried it.

I finally possessed the ability to buy a 996GT3 last summer, and decided to take the plunge and place an order on a 997 GT3 (two deposits, in fact). If the 997 continued down the GT3 route (more track car than street car) then I was going to flip the 996 and upgrade... But herein lies the problem.... The 997GT3 really takes a step back in driver involvement. Sure, it is faster. Sure, it is more foregiving. But at the end of the day, I want to earn my stripes in my track car. The 996 GT3 provides that, and for now, I have no reason to buy the latest and greatest. What makes me nuts is that "new" 997 GT3 owenrs continue to think that the latest is always the best. Furthermore, they have this opinion that 996GT3 owners are just expressing sour grapes because 1) we couldn't afforf the 997, 2) we couldn't get an allocation, or 3) we are just closed minded losers afraid of change. Huh? Look, if I were to buy a car for looks (interior/exterior/overall sex appeal), the 997 GT3 wins HANDS DOWN. It is truly one hot car. BUT, I am not buying it to drive to Friday dinner with my wife. Rather, I am buying it for the track first and foremost. Okay, now people will say - if you want a track car, why not buy a Cup? Good point - but I do not know anyone in my state that I trust servicing a Cup. Furthermore, I like taking my "track" car under warranty to any local PCar dealer. Yes, they could refuse service, but I'd argue that a little relationship building will solve that....

So what is wrong with the 997 GT3? Well, IMHO it went soft - sunroof, TC, compliant suspension, etc. And the RS? Darn it - it got fat! Where is all of the weight loss that the ROW gets? But OMG - it so damn good looking! If it were for art's sake, I would buy it right now... No, I'll keep my current 996 GT3 and start the mod process to continue to make it faster. It just feels right when I drive it... how can I argue with that?

My lenghty $0.02,

-B

hey hey hey, i certainly dont have the 997 trumps 996gt3 attitude. i find the two cars different. so much so, i need my 996gt3 back. anyone selling?

I dont either and would have liked to keep it unfortunately physically I was unable to enjoy it the way I had it setup (perfect) this 997 being a little more laid back helps my back (just had an injection in the SI joint in my butt hopefully today will start the end of my problems) The 997 Looks dont hurt though.
I still like the 6 Thicker wheel and carbon shifter better.

you can get carbon shifter from other 997 models.

did your car come with alcantara wheel? you can order a fat leather wheel for $4-500 (re-use existing air bag). i have the fat leather wheel in mine.

Yea I have the alcantara wheel- it feels small and cheap compared to my 6 wheel.
Yea I want to do some carbon upgrades as soon as my wife cools down (maybe 2012?)

Hell I haven't even come down to near perfection on my 996 GT3(not by a mile) to think about the 997 GT3. Granted the 997 RS is da bomb in looks(Mooty-when u sell lmk unless a green one comes by : )!! lmk). I have fun thinkering with the 996 GT3(as like a snail's pace) and will probably never get to 10/10ths til my car is worth 40k in the market. Honestly doesn't matter- to own either one is sheer pleasure : ). Mike

Paul, if you ask me, I don't think she would.

Let's see, a 996 GT3 (probably the only Manthey in U.S.), then a BMW X5 4.8is, then a consolation 335i for her, and a brand new 997 GT3.

For less than that my wife would go rampage on me.

I owned a Mk-I GT3 for 3 years, then a Mk-II for a month, and now I have a 996 RS, all of them daily drivers. The 996 RS has really brutal rear springs, but I still love it as my daily transport even though my friends think I'm crazy. Truth is, I find the RS so much fun that I am genuinely addicted to it.

Recently I got the opportunity to drive the 997 GT3 and RS. My experience is all "spirited" street driving, not track. The 997 versions are way more comfortable than their forebears, and they seem better built to me. In particular, the gearchange action in the 997 is slicker with a more pleasing and accurate "rifle bolt" feel. The new engine also feels noticeably meatier than the 996's. But it's the infinitely more comfortable suspension that is most noticeable in comparison with the 996, particularly the seriously stiff 996 RS.

I have been agonizing over whether to trade my 996 for a 997, and still haven't decided. I am pretty sure I would not trade my 996 RS for the non-RS 997 as it felt like it has lost some of the hard GT3 edge I enjoy so much. But the 997 RS beckons. It drove a lot like my 996 RS, but better put together and way more comfortable as a daily driver. The problem is that it may be better in many ways, and more comfortable, but I seriously doubt it would be any more fun. I know it would be faster on a track, but I don't really care about that.
