996'er thinking of GT3
Lots of questions for you guys. Why did you switch to the GT3? Was it what you expected and MOST importantly- are you still happy after a period of time?
I have read back through the forum a ways. Seems the 996 version is perhaps more liked? Anyone care to comment again on this for me.
Did any of you consider a 993TT or a 996TT for the horsepower an opt out to a GT3? What were your reasons?
Did any of you sell a GT3 to get a real track car or are you wishing you did or thinking you might. Can i ask why?
Thanks in advance.

I went from a 993TT to a GT3- I was spending a lot to get the TT track ready and once I did- it came to me that the GT3 is what I want- so I sold the TT (at the bottom of the TT market now they seem to be going up) and got my GT3. Put in the GT3 seats roll bar and RS cltuch and LWF. it already had the Manthey 410 power kit so I am set. I love the car and havent looked back. I do find the 997 GT3 and the RS interesting too.
but to preserve my marriage and lentghen my life I am not going to try to talk my wife into the 997 and keep the 996 GT3.
I find the motor noise from 6000-8000 rpm intoxicating- the accelleration is almost as good as the TT if not better. I love this car. I really do. I drove several 996TTs and found it not involving enough-too isolated. Compared to a GT3 the TT is like a rolls. The GT3 is just a great car- I have driven a nice 360 too and found that to be closer to the GT3 than the TT siblings-weird but thats my opinion. You'll love it
best peice of advise I can give you is to take your time and drive all 3 and come to your own conclusion. There is a reason we all left for GT3's its rip roaring fun.

I wanted a car that was better on the track than on the street...also, the lines of the 996 GT3 just resonated with me...the car has turned out to be more than I expected....I've had mine for 2 years and can't wait for the next track day....there is risk in tracking a car of this expense...even if you don't make any mistakes there are other drivers/cars...if you are worried about damage you won't be driving your best...to replace the GT3 with a comparable race car you would be spending the same or more...I think a viable alternative would be an Exige for track and a TT for street

I went from a 996 to a GT3 recently. Felt that I was either going to have to turn the 996 into a project track car (and kill the resale value in the process) or just pony up and get a GT3. Obviously went with the latter and couldn't be happier. A project would have been fun but the 996 just didn't seem as robust a platform as the GT3 in general. This thing is amazing. Now I just need to control myself and not turn IT into a project. Dropped it off at The Racer's Group today to have a few goodies installed.... but I refuse to go back into that parts room again
Anyway, do it...there will be no regrets.

All I can say if u do track a fair bit you'll love the GT3. I had great times with my reg 996 and the GT3 is just more track focused out of the box. The engine/tranny is worth the price of admission. GO FOR IT!!!! Regards. Mike

I also went from a Boxster to a Boxster S. to a Carrera 4S, to a 996TT and finally to a GT3...
I believe that ALL the possible information about the "Why's" is contained in this thread and the threads refered inside...

A little different for me....
I also went from a C2 to a GT3. There were several reasons but these were important to me:
1) I wanted something that was just more rare or different. There are lots of C2s and TTs around here. Don't get me wrong, I stare at every Porsche I see but I just wanted something else.
2) The C2 I had was wonderful but it felt too disconnected from the road. Even though it's a sports car it always felt like it rode too high and too loose.
3) I looked at switching the suspension out to ROW030 and doing a few other things. It was going to be a lot of money and by the time I was done I wasn't all THAT far from a GT3.
4) I started doing a little looking and found exactly what I wanted. Speed Yellow, low miles, good options...

Tastes in cars are hard to explain. I don't track my car. I'm 46 and level-headed. But something in my blood goes for sports cars and sporty driving. I had a 2000 996 C2 with 18-inch wheels and US 030 sport suspension. That is as sporty as the basic 996 gets in bone-stock US trim. I enjoyed it, but If found it to be WAY too soft, too heavy, and too high. So I got a 2005 GT3. It is much more to my liking. It solves two out of three of my complaints: It's stiff and responsive (so not too soft), and it's certainly not too high. However, it still feels heavy to me. It makes up for that with more power and a lovely engine. But I don't want more power. I want a lighter GT3. The point of this email is that, if you drive one, you will know. I couldn't go back to a regular 996. I would have to go back to a 70s or 80s 911.
