Default GT3–RS: Interpreting Data - 1.4 gs?????

Just spent a day of driving and instruction with Craig Stanton (Grand AM champ 2005, plus a number of other racing accolades), using my 996 GT-3 RS street legal clone. For reference purposes, a few changes were made to my stock GT-3 (former Larry Herman’s), including: Clubsport Motons, floating hat APs front and rear, shorten gears 3rd through 6th, full RS suspension, monoballs, MPSCs. In essence, the car has been upgraded to (and beyond) a street legal Euro GT-3RS. Track was Spring Mountain using the 3.1 mile configuration, a fairly technical track with long sweepers, a variety of decreasing and increasing radius turns, some tight turns, a few straight-aways and essess. Basic data acquisition was by Racepak’s G2X system.

I am now attempting to go through the data from the G2X and have attached a few of the graphs. Most notable is that there was a difference from reported lateral G’s and GPS lateral Gs. Not sure that my car could in fact turn 1.4gs. Can anyone explain differences and how to interpret this data?

In any event, I was very pleased with the RS suspension upgrades and very surprised as to the lateral g’s the car was capable. Irrespective of whatever lateral g’s were turned, the lap timer tells all; my personal best has been a 2:35, while Craig’s time was 2:30. I have a lot of work to do, but will enjoy every minute of trying to do so……….

Great day of learning about driving techniques, the car’s limits and the track. Craig was fabulous and was a patient and experienced instructor. In the end, the best enhancement I have made to the car is private instruction: highly recommended!!!

car looks great...you might want to post the data in the racers forum cuz you will get more input there. Craig is great...I was fortunate to get some time with him at Buttonwillow at a GT3 Rennschule...he is so smooth and yet fast...bet you had a great time

I believe the lateral G measurement is from the built in accelerometer in the G2X, while the GPS figure is calculated from the GPS readings (direction change, distance traveled, speed, etc). I think the accelerometers would also pick up "noise" from bumps, vibrations, etc, that would affect the G readings.

The 1.4G reading is a peak figure, not necessarily sustained. I've seen 1.2-1.25 peak G figures in my stock GT3 on street PS2s, so I'm not surprised if you are seeing blips of 1.4. An eyeball average of the G's during turns looks like 1.2-1.25Gs (my car is more like 0.9-1.0).

Hope that helps.

Thusly,

I just purchased the Racepak G2x package. Where did you mount the display? Did you hard wire for RPM's? Is so did you do it yourself or did you have a shop do it?

Thanks,

Thanks,
G2x display is located the leftmost side on top of the dash; unit is located on center console (center console delete); professional installation. Display shows RPMs.

Great job staying reasonably close to Craig, thusly. Five seconds off a world class driver on a technical track is very respectable. He's a great benchmark so you know your car is going about as fast as it can go!

Thanks for the words of encouragement! It was interesting to dissect the data further - he is about .1 - .2 g's more in many areas, and about 5-10 mph faster on exit (and as a result, had higher track out speeds). The most interesting thing is that it never really felt that fast; he is incredibly smooth and in general, he: carries more speed into the corners (at a balanced pace); tends to feather the brakes (as opposed to threshold brake); and late apexes most areas; and does not demonstrate any significant brake/throttle/brake fluctuations (in other words, the car always feels very balanced). In some places, I think he actually carries less speed on entry than I was (my entry speed was higher in a few areas), sacrificing for greater exit speed.

I stated before when he had driven my GT-2 on the track; he has the smoothness of a professional chauffer, all at very high speeds.

thusly.....having met you on the track when you had your CTTS in my Red run group I must say that is one VERY impressive time in the GT3. IIRC, my personal best at SM in the full 3.1 setup was around 2:50-2:55 but then again that was in a 996C2CAB with street tires and RoWM030. What I wouldn't give to hit that track with my GT3 and see what times I could turn now having driven that track for 3 years! Too bad I am all the way on the East Coast now

Sure do miss that circuit!

Your car is the one by which all other 996 GT3/RS's are measured by....that's one awesome ride!!
