Changing Camshafts on a GT3 ?
I've read that a Belgium tuner has a conersion kit. THey claim 425 HP on a MKII. Chip, Exhaust. Air Filter and...Camshafts. ( With Variocam adjusting )
The Camshafts are the following:
M0241-PO-016JGHR1 street INT cam RIGHT PORSCHE 996 GT3 302°/12,0/hydr M0242-PO-016JGHL2 street INT cam LEFT PORSCHE 996 GT3 302°/12,0/hydr
M0246-PO-016JGHR3 street EXH cam RIGHT PORSCHE 996 GT3 294°/11,5/hydr
M0247-PO-016JGHL4 street EXH cam LEFT PORSCHE 996 GT3 294°/11,5/hydr
MK293-PO-MPVK0001 complete kit to convert "Variocam" to fix cam timing (mechanical & electronical)
Does anyone have any experience with this ? Should this conversion have consequences on the reliability of the car ? Wouldn't the Camshaft change afect the power curve making it less "round" at lower revs ???

There are a lot of Belgian tuners, many of them involved inb the Belcar GT series.
However, why make it hard on yourself when you can just deal with Manthey? Unlike the Belgian tuners, Manthey has a direct connection to the Porsche factory, runs the Porsche Junior team in the DE Carrera Cup and Michelin Supercup, is part of the development team for the 997 RSR and regularly runs up to half a dozen cars in the German Edurance Championship at the Nürburgring.
When tuning cars its important to minimise risk.

I am a customer of both Manthey and Kempower, so I can compare. Nordschleife is right in all he says, but probably is not aware that the total conversion, work included, to upgrade my MK1 to 425 bhp cost a mere 7275 euros plus VAT, of which parts were only some 4000 euros. At Manthey that would cost you about 2-3 times that amount (the 400 kit costs some 10k euros for parts and the 440 kit cost almost 30k euros). Would I buy from Manthey if the price was the same ? You bet. But to get an extra 65 Din hp for just 7275 euros is a bargain.
I have done a track full season without any problems so far.

Any feedback on the power curve with the Kempower camshafts ? What about low and midle range torque ? ( I woudn't want to loose 1 NM there.. )

I am a (happy) Manthey customer for my suspension settings, not for engine tuning. Manthey doesn't have a package in the 410-425 hp range for a MK1.

I would regear the tranny long before changing anything in the engine.....it's low cost with great results. Trust me on this do not go in the engine..it's to expensive if anything goes wrong...and it does happen. Try the regear with some weight reduction and a good set of sticky tires, you will be very happy.

Z06, Thanks !
At this stage, I am trying to find the best ratio money/performance/reliability... I am considering different options: weight reduction, suspension mod, LWFW, regearing, etc... for the moment my only mods are seats, roll over bar, scrotch 6 points, Isaac, MPSC's ( now R888's) and a good alignment..
If you consider that a Kempower conversion of a GT3 MKII to 420 hp is around 9.000 US$ al done... It's quite tempting. This includes ECU, Filter, Manifolds and Exhausts. They are experienced tuners.
If the equivalent weight/Hp ratio seems to be 12 pounds less= 1HP , I would need to expend a fortune on weight reduction... ( of course, less weight would benefit the behaviour of the car in a way that can not be attained with HP's only.....).. ALso, the (serious) weight reduction alters the car in a way that makes it a difficult car to sell later ...
Well...I am still deciding...

I have a spreadsheet calculating the various options for increased hp per euro and reduced weight per euro. Re engine power, the curve is obviously non-linear, because the first additional 10 hp are the easiest to extract. So I went about it backwards : I decided how much hp I wanted to stay up with the most modern GT3s and then shopped around. Re weight reduction, I think you cannot compare this simply with increased hp. Increased hp helps you accelerate faster and maintain a higher speed on average on the straights. lower weight will help you with everything : acceleration, braking and cornering. So I would prefer a 5% weight reduction over a 5% increase in hp. As things stand, I was able to increase hp of my car by some 15% (from 360 to 425) for a price for which I would be able to reduce weight only by about 5% (assume carbon doors, bonnet, lighter wheels, lighter exhaust). I cannot prove it, but I suspect the gains of 15% more hp muct be greater than those of a 5% weight reduction. Mind you, I am currently going through the weight reduction as well. I quite like overtaking more modern GT3s in my old, totally standard-looking Mk1 (at less than half the price of a new 997 GT3 RS).
Finally, the best return by far on your money remains driving tuition.
