Default 2200rpm coasting engine noise

I notice while cruising down my street towards my house, kind of idling along at 2200 rpm or so in 3rd there's a metallic rattle sound in the engine kind of like a lifter noise. It goes away above 2500 or so, or below 1800.

Anyone else ever notice this?

I don't mind noises, as long as they're normal. I'd hate to ignore something that could be a problem, however!

Thanks

Lifters are a tapping noise.

I have a mechanical growling or low frequency whine when I troll along at low speed. When the engine rpm picks up it goes away. Maybe that is what you hear?

Steve B I know exactly the sound you are talking about. I can hear mine even at idle but only between 2200 and 2400.
I noticed it on mine when I first picked up the car new and I have 15K on mine now. Dealer says its normal and I've never had any problems, but Im not sure what it is though.

Thanks
I figured it was normal, but, doesn't hurt to ask. I originally thought it was something in the exhaust system, so I had my wife rev the engine to 2000 while I was laying under the rear. It is definitely the engine internals. Again, good if it's normal, doesn't bother me, just don't want to ignore something abnormal!

It occurs under light acceleration or deceleration approx 2000-2400 or so.

I had the same question. The dealer though it might be an AC pulley so they removed all the belts.. still there. They called Porsche and were told it is the timing chain without tension. Once I was told it was normal I have not worried. Also, I hear the same sound with all of the GT3s around Seattle

Probably totally unrelated, but I get a strange noise at exactly 2000 RPM also. I think that whatever it is, it is simply vibrating at the "resonance frequency," which might be the case with with your cars...

Yeah, I get exactly the same thing, although mine is a little lower down the RPM range. Sounds kinda like a bearing rattle. Subtle, but there. I was told it's the untentioned timing chain, as well.
