Default Windshield Replacement

I got a nasty rock chip on the way back from Thunderhill this weekend..not the end of the world...But, overnight it turned into a nice crack about 9 inches long. I called a windshield replacement shop and they claimed the glass on the GT3 is different from other 911s??? I think is was their way of screwing over the porsche owner. I've read the glass is different from the cup car...but is it different than a standard C4? Thanks in advance.

Take it to the dealer, let the glass guy put on the correct Porsche glass.

The windshield for the MY04 GT3 is the same as the standard MY02+ 996, Porsche part number #996-541-901-04 or #996-541-901-04 for the dark green (upper) tinted version. Just make sure that the shop DOES NOT try to reuse the existing seal and that they glue (#000-043-300-94) the windshield into place following the instructions from Porsche. You will also want them to check the window aperture for bare metal from cutting out the old seal and to brush/spray on some primer (which is included with the porsche adhesive kit) otherwise you will have rust problems 2-3 years from now! No matter what your glass installer tells you that he knows, make him follow the instructions from Porsche to the letter. They always say, "oh ya, no problem" and then when the rust shows up they are no where to be found and you're screwed for a $2k repair bill.

I am sure I have read it somewhere part of the weight saving program on the GT3s are thinner glass, thinner carpet/less insulation, & etc... So I think the windshield should be different too, am I wrong?

The GT3 windshield is the same as the 996. Way cheaper than the 993 which was a nice suprise. Do it at the dealer.

Default Windshield

I had a rock chip also and it cracked across the left side of the windshield by the time I got home. It was professionally replaced by the Porshce shop which outsources the work. I am happy with the new window and it is the same thickness as any other (04?) 996 type.

One thing the glass installer did say however is that the side windows are all thinner in an effort to reduce weight.

Andrew.

The rear window glass (996-545-901-03) and the side window glass (996-543-111-03 & 996-543-112-03) and the door glass (996-542-511-02 & 996-542-512-02) are exactly the same in the GT3 models as the stock MY02+ 996.
