Here is a nice video from renn tv of a Porsche 997 Cup (sequential gear box) at Nurburgring in the wet (71 MBytes) to ensure you are hooked.
Both 996 or 997 Cups are great race cars.

I saw that. It rocks. Yeah, I am just debating on how to enter, via a street 996 GT3 and maybe later a 997 cup? The problem is that I would want to convert the street GT3 into a dedicated track/race car. I still will keep the EVO and I think I am just going to get a street M3 to commute and occasionally track. This is a disease!!

The group here just wants you to make a sound decision so that you will be happy with your race car.
The used Cup car candidates will require careful scrutiny on your part (advice from a trusted race mechanic who knows these cars is critical). The asking price does not tell the story. You will need all the details for the major components and complete list of all that is included with the car. Spares add up cost wise.
A key area for these cars is the condition of the unit body. Body damage is to be expected on any used race car but when the damage gets into the unit body you need the details. If the unit body is damaged where the suspension attaches... that is hard to fix properly. When that happens most race teams buy another unit body from Porsche AG and move their components over.

Kelly Moss has two 04's but priced at a premium, also check out the grand-american message board there's a bunch on there. I think Synergy also has an 04 for sale as well.

You should get with Hyaku, he has a spec 996 car, its not a Cup, it is just as fast, but built by Glenn Yee racing. The car is nice, well sorted and quick. The engine is also X50 based, but puts out solid numbers.
This is where you start.

I have a 996 GT3 and a 996gt3 cup car, please take the Advice of my fellow rennlisters Larry, Cosmos, mooty and Jersy bean. .. they are very knowledgeable of these cars they are truly trying to help you with the correct decision ... things with these car can get expensive very very quickly.
I do think it will be hard if not impossible to obtain a new 997 cup car as an individual...
good luck either way you go ... please drive one before you buy one

Today I saw the IMSA Porsche cup race at Road America. Last year there were aprox 20 or so cars and this year 41 cars. Not all were 997 GT3 CUPS but most were. Running this series is a way to get a car. I heard a few cost numbers this weekend. Cost of the car, up to 3 sets of slicks, $10,000 and up for full support plus parts, and don't forget the carnige. I don't know if the 50 min. race had 6 laps without caution. A fight at the end between drivers that did not agree. Really expensive fun Ha!

interesting vid...thanks for posting it. Was it me or did the driver not appear to be blipping to match rev's on the sequential down shifts? I asked Kevin Buckler about this exact situation and he told me that it is very important to do so in order to preserve gearbox function, yet both he and Overbeek said that they will occasionally skip a clutch in move and do a blip and hit it hard...I've tried both ways and blipping with clutching is much less upstting to the "crash box" than not. It seemed really harsh in the vid. The rebuilds on the sequential boxes are notoriously expensive......BTW; where did the BMW's disappear to? those things were smoking fast!

I spoke to Dudley about that car a few months ago. If I hadn't just bought the RSA, we would have been talking about MY new Cup Car! Good luck with it.
